Topic Dog Boards / Health / Mini Schnazuer - first season?
- By karenC [gb] Date 12.06.03 10:36 UTC
Dear All

It isnt something covered by any of the books I have. But, could someone advise when her first season is likely to be (she is almost 6 months old now, weight approx 16 lbs), as I know it varies by breed/size.

Many thanks
Karen.

|Britney an 8 month old Dogue de Bordeaux and weighs in at just over 8 stone she started her first season, 2 weeks ago she, I would expect it to last another week to 10 days , but the keep her away from other dog's for another few days or so to make sure that she is clear.
The Tibetan Mastiffs I have only come in season once a year and did not have her first season untill she was 14 month's old, The Yorky and Tibetan Spaniel come in every 6 months regularly, they are both the same age and had there first season at 6 months. The Newfoundlands are not regular at all they fluctuate bwtween 5-6 months and last 30+ day, This seems to show that different bitch's have different cycles, and you have to watch and hope some pattern emerges.I think the book say 6 months for the first, season then every 6 months for then on.and the average season lasts 28 days, the peak time between 10 to 14 th day's being the most fertile. but I would say every bitch is different and you will learn from you bitch in time.

Many thanks for all the information. As I suspected this varies greatly between size and breed. At six months I guess I'll just have to keep an eye out for signs.

If there are any owners of female Mini Schnauzers out there, itwould be useful to know the typical age....

Thanks again
Karen.
