Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Flatcoat chewing her nails
- By liberty Date 19.06.03 23:46 UTC
My young flatcoat bitch often chews her nails (she's doing it now,!!!) and it sounds horrible :(
She has plenty of chews and her nails are quite short anyway, any ideas as to why she does this?

I would say that she's probably a bit bored and its just something to do. Monty sucks his paws until they're really soggy if he hasn't got something better to do. I'm pretty sure he hasn't got an allergy or pain etc. If I pick up his kong and throw it, he's up like a shot to pounce on it and play a game. Maybe Libby's the same?

My lab "manicures" once a day or every couple of days. This is natural and healthy. If however it happens more often and for more than approx. 10 minutes at a time then it could indeed be boredom.
All dogs get bored in the same way that humans do and develp obsessive behaviour as a result. Make sure this isn't the case by leaving plenty of stuff laying around that can keep her busy: hidden treats for her to find, a kong stuffed with treats that need to be carefully extracted, all sorts of toys, chews, etc....
All the best!
Pia

PS Any additional treats you leave around the place to keep her busy should be deducted from her main meal (in terms of calories). That way you don't run the risk of over feeding.
