hi. i have a four year old japanese akita called zeus and what i wanted to ask is his ears have never went up. sometimes he can put them up but it only lasts for a few seconds. will his ears be like that for good or is there anything i can do to help strenghten the muscles. he is prone to getting ear infections as well and his ears sometimes get itchy.

Hi Guest,
I'm sure if I'm wrong someone will come along and tell us, but I think if his ears are still down now, that's how they will stay :) I know is occasionally happens in German Shepherds too. I also have an Akita who is now three and his ears are down as well, mind you if they stood up he would look like dumbo as they are rather large! We have always assumed he is not a pure bred, as he was a rescue pup, but who knows.
With regards to his ear infections, if he has hair in his ears then they will trap more dirt; if possible try to keep the hairs trimmed, and it may be worth getting some ear drops from the vet to clean his ears with regularly so hopefully stopping any infection getting hold.
Hope that helps
Grace :D

Hi guest I have had two Akitas and as far as I am aware that if their ears are not up by about 6 months then they wont go up.

Hi Sammylea I fed my akitas Omega complete dry food for puppies, then when he was about 6 months I started to give him the junior omega complete. What are you feeding him just know?

I was feeding him on Euro Premium, then i switched to Omega Puppy (but he wasn't too keen on it) and now he's on Superdog puppy food. He likes tinned dog food but it just gives him the runs!
Do Akitas get depressed easily, me and my partener work all day and he is left in the kitchen until one of us comes home. I hate leaving him, cause i know he hates being on his own!! :(

My akita coped with being left alone a lot but she was in a run as I reckon they prefer to be outside than in. But we got her a playmate in the end - best thing we could have done for her (worst thing for us though!)
