In March I purchased a Cocker Spaniel puppy who was not registered (neither were his litter mates)(born 8/12/02).
I have his pedigree and it appears that both his parents were, is there any way he can be registered with The Kennel Club now?
I have contacted the breeder but she was disnterested and decididly noncommittal on the subject.
I am presuming that ABO1743403 would be a regisration necessary. Any advice or info would be gratefully received.
Many Thanks, Sarah in Wales.

Hi Sarah,
Only the breeder can register the litter, and they must have had the forms signed by the stud dog owner in order to do so. It may well be that the bitch has been bred too often and this is why they don't want to register the litter, can and does happen. Unfortunately if they don't want to register your pup then as it was sold as unregistered there is not a lot you can do, sorry.

Only the breeder can register the litter but if she says theres no reason why they shouldn't be registered ask her if you did all the work would she sign the neccessary papers.Ask the same of the stud owner if you can get their phone no.
Ask for a form from the KC ,fill in the details and send to sires and dams owner with a self addressed envelope for them to return it to you.Long shot but might be worth a try-if they refuse I'd think there was a reason why they haven't registered them.

hi
as Grace and Archer said. There is obviously a reason why she didnt register them, it is very unusual for a reputable breeder to not register, and to take the attitude towards you that she did. Are the sire and dam on the certificate deffinatly the parents? I dont mean to sound negative, but the other possibility is that they were bred from some other dogs.
Also, as was mentioned, it is likely that she has over bred the bitch to the extent that she cannot register.
If I were you I would try and have a chat with her, dont sound angry though or she might just hang up on you. If you could pop round it would be even better. The thing is, you need to know also if these are the real parents to ensure that you have a healthy pup.
Good luck.

Hi, I think everything has been covered in the replies to your post. But you could try calling the kennel club and explaining the situation, they won't be able to register the pup without the breeders signature, but will be able to check that both sire and dam are registered (and that the numbers written on the pedigree are correct) if you get a sympathetic person, they will probably let you know how many litters the dam has had. It may well be that she has been bred on consequetive seasons, in which case is against KC rules and they can refuse to register the litter. If all is correct and in order, it will cost £60 to register your pup and as already mentioned you will need the signatures of the sire and dam to be able to do so. Good Luck :)

I've heard several 'reasons' that people have given for not registering pups-the best one being it costs £100 per pup and so is too expensive!!!!.The reason people don't register is usually because the pups are inelligible for registration for one reason or another.

Are you sure about the £100 per pup? I was only talking to my breeder yesterday and he was complaining about the price, but it was £12.
I think Archer meant that £100 to register each pup was one of the worst lies that they have heard as to why people don't register the pups:-)

Hi Kimberley, It is true that you cannot show any dog/bitch at either Open shows or Championship shows unless it is KC registered, but they do not have to be shown in order to be registered (if that makes sense). By registering any litters the breeders undertake to abide by the KC code of ethics, may be this is why some of them don't register? Litters can only be registered if both parents are, as well.

Thanks for clearing that up Dotty, I did wonder. Apart from that a sire and dam who could sign their names wouldn't bother with KC registration anyway;) they'd be too busy talking to Jonathan Ross and Breakfast TV LOL
