Hi peeps,
I have thought of something else to ask you :D
Every morning I take my 5month old GSD to the shop to get a paper, I tie him up out side as he isnt allowed inside. He always cries when I do this which is a tad embarressing at 6.30 in the morning. I am hoping the more he gets used to it the less likely he is to cry. I only leave him the for a few seconds, any other great advice to help him along a bit?

I take Hudson into the papershop with me ..it is one of the few shops that don't seem to mind. I wouldn't leave a pup outside a shop for few of it getting pinched , no matter HOW quick I was :)

I know this won't help but go to another paper shop :) take your buissiness elsewhere ;)

Our papershop has stopped allowing dogs in, which is a flaming nuisance! Perhaps you could practice tying him out when you're in the garden with him, weeding etc. I've heard it's a good way of teaching them to wait, and they don't get anxious because they can see you. It's a longterm solution, though, and doesn't help your immediate problem I'm afraid.. :(

Zoe,
I have lost count of the number of times I've read in my local free paper about dogs being stolen while they were tied up outside a shop. It only takes a few seconds. As this is a routine for you I am afraid that your puppy is an easy mark for a thief.

hi all! i myself used to leave my pup outside shops and she did wine but soon grew out of it. however since reading all the stuff on this board iv realised how lucky i have been not to get her stolen as she is a pedigree. now i try not not to leave her outside if i can because like you said it only takes a second. i suppose its like leaving a £10 note out on the street, you can't expect a thief to keep his/her hands of that so why not a valuable dog? neway thats just my humble opinion. at least if your dog is wining you know hes still outside! :P

Hi,
The last time I left a dog tied up outside a shop I returned to find a 5 year old child kicking him

The mother was watching
Tore a strip off her and told her the child was darned lucky not to get bitten but it went over her head "he wuzn hurtin!"
I never tied him up again, just put him in a sit/stay.
That was ten years ago, these days I wouldn't leave a scabby rat outside a shop - it would get pinched around here :D

Lol ok thx guys I shall have to sneak him in the shop under my jacket (bit hard for a GSD though) :D
Hi, when I first tried to tie my dog up and walk away, she broke the tree I had tied her to and I had only stepped about two feet away. There was no one else around and we were in a field, but she still panicked. Anyway this is what I did. I trained my dog to 'wait' (stay in the same place) indoors with treats. Gradually, I moved further away, until I could even go in another room for a while and she stays where she is because she knows if she does she will get her treat. If she does move (did alot at first) I would just give the command again and start again. Now, when I do have to tie her to something, I tell her to 'wait' and she is okay about it. I do not ever leave her unattended as I am sure someone would steal her where I live, but sometimes I go into a local takeaway from where I can still see her, and leave her outside. Hope this helps
