Topic Dog Boards / Health / Small crack on pads??
- By karenC [gb] Date 12.06.03 10:41 UTC
Dear All

(Having a champdogs morning today!). Could anyone advise? Poppy has quite dry looking pads and I have this morning noticed that she has two small cracks, they arent deep, or painful. Is there somthing I should put on her feet.

(For info, she usually has two walks a day on tarmac (totalling 30 minutes) and might additionally be let of the lead on dirt/grass track. The rest of the time she plays in our garden mainly on the grass).

Thanks
Karen

Hi Karen

Rufus’ pads are exactly the same – cracked, dry and rough feeling.
But I suppose if I were to walk round bare footed my feet would be the same!

I just assumed it was part and parcel of growing up.

You can buy small tins of pad moisturiser at pets at home for about £3, it also
Helps with grip. I think I might buy some next time I am there.

With regard to whether poppy is in season, sorry can’t help there! :-)

Hope your well. We are taking Rufus up to the Isle of Harris (outer heberdies) for a week of mischief next week.

Louise x

You can get paw wax, but we always used to use vasoline to stop the pad drying out and to keep them supple.

Thanks for the notes - good to know Poppy isnt the only one! I shall now be regularly moisturing her feet :-)

You have answered my question before I even posted - thanks for the info :D
Do they tend to lick the moisturiser/Vaseline off and will it do any harm if they do ?

I've been told vegetable (cooking) oil rubbed in does the trick - gonna try olive oil myself!!

How about some pure aloe vera? We grow the aloe vera cactus to use for things like skin irritations on our dogs. Im sure that would help moisterise and its completely natural.
