I got up on Friday morning to find my 9 yr old black lab bitch paralysed on the kitchen floor. She was fully conscious, but unable to move her back legs. She has four discs in her spine which are out of alignment. She has been in hospital since Friday and tomorrow is the day I will find out the true reality of her condition. I have been to visit her each day and believe that she has truly lost her fighting spirit. I am devestated as this came completely out of the blue and the night before it happened she was happily trotting round the field. I feel that I am losing hope that she can get back on her feet as the vet says her condition is inoperable. I have only had her for 16 months as she was a rescue lab. Her little companion, my five year old chocolate lab bitch is so subdued and confused and I am at a loss as to what to do to help her. If you have any suggestions I would be so grateful. I dread what I feel is the inevitable tomorrow, but must focus on the fact that I have had the best 16 months with my darling who will always be in my heart.

Discs can sometimes be manipulated back into place. I know of an English Setter who had this problem and he got over it ok. The weakness does seem to remain though. Talk to your vet when you see him or her tomorrow but don't give up hope yet.

You could ask to be referred to an orthopaedic specialist who might be able to help.

Another alternative is acupuncture.

Oh dear. I do hope she will get better. Please let us know how things go. Try not to worry and give your chocolate girl lots of hugs but I will keep my fingers crossed your poorly girl will be home soon.

Jessie, do not give up first of all. I dont know where abouts you are but I can suggest a specialist who specialises in EXACTLY THIS and takes referals from all over the UK. He is based in south west. I have had a bitch with a similar problem, went to RVC etc (quite useless!) and although there is no surgery, they dogs can be ok. Mine was paralysed for a week & on another occassion for 3 weeks. I thought it was the end, but with the right treatment she went on to live 7 years. let me know if you want the details emailed to you.

Hi Jessie, Please don't give up - I know how worried you must be, but you can take heart from all the positive postings here, especially from Sam... don't give up until you have exhausted all possibilities.
Let us know how she gets on, I've got everything crossed for you.
Sharon
