Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Slipping kneecap - any advice?
- By guest [gb] Date 16.06.03 08:46 UTC
Our 10 month old whippet is having problems with his right hind leg: his patella slips fairly regularly & although it seems to cause no pain & slides back pretty easily, we obviously want to prevent this becoming an ongoing or increasing problem. Does anyone have any experience of alternative therapies for this, such as supplements (glucosamine?) or exercise (swimming?) as we'd love to avoid going down the surgery route at such a young age.

Many thanks for any advice or personal experiences.

Hi Guest, I had an Irish Setter that had the same thing as a 5 month old puppy. My vet referred us to an Orthopaedic specialist, Malcolm Ness. His advice was to encourage loads and loads of free running exercise, and also to allow him to jump as well. This strengthens the ligaments that hold the patella in position. I did take the advice, even though it was contrary to everything I would normally do with such a young puppy. We avoided the need for surgery, and his patella never slipped again.
