OK I'll hold my hand up I hijacked my little sis's thread on rats to ask my qustion, but it has got lost in all the postings.

So I'm starting my own. lol

Has anyone else got a mass invasion of flies at the moment, cos we have and it is driving me and the dogs doo lally!!! Poacher is laying here growling at them for having the nerve to land on his back. lol

Any suggestions for getting rid of the darned things, preferably not chemical as I have a bitch due to whelp in a week and don't want to take any risks.

Lavender in an oil burner works for us, you could give it a go :)
- By lisa [gb] Date 14.06.03 21:42 UTC
Yeh I know sis but I'm not telling - just watch house cleaners and you should learn :D ONLY JOKING

We make our own fly spray for the horse which includes, tea tree oil, citronella etc I'll get the recipe if you want. Failing that, try a good swatter but watch out for animal rights people! ;)

Knew thats what your answer would be Sis :-D Cheeky c*w

Seriously though thanks for that everyone I'll give them all a go.

The only time I tried those flypapers was years ago, and I forgot they were there and walked into it, took me forever to get the gunge and dead flies out of my hair!!! :-D :-D

Burning the lavendar oil may work actually as I put a small dab of lavendar oil on my two dogs to stop the harvest mites and it really works a treat. Last year they had not one harvest mite on them whereas the year before they were covered in them. I put a tiny bit behind their ears and behind the elbows :-)

seems that lavender is the thing to try possibly with the citronella

I'll keep you updated if it works

Thanks everyone

I have lavender all over the place as I love the smell of it and havent noticed many flies but will start burning it too now to keep them away. Got told off for putting a bit of lavender oil straight on the lightbulb so will use the proper containers now!! :p

Used lavender body lotion last night too as am addicted to the stuff - so no flies on me LOL :D :p
(I know not very funny but I am in my lunch hour at work :D )

you can't get rid of them but the old fashoned stickiy fly paper in the kennel works great

I find that Lavender/Citronella oil in a water spray works better that a burner. Just shake it really well before spraying. I also wipe around windows and doors with it to discourage them. My house is a fly-free zone :D :D :D :D

Uuurrrggghh - I HATE flies . Especially those big blue bottles that just bang against the window all day !! .
The most disgusting of creatures! :(
Lady Dazzle- flypapers - double yuk . How did you manage to get them out of your hair ? I am cringing with horror at the thought :(

as the house is only a few yards away from the cattle sheds...we have lots of flies here...however since having the oriental cat, there are less, as she spends every waking moment stalking killing & eating them!

I hate the darn things too. Tried the lavender approach last year with no effect so this year I'm off out to buy one of those electrical plug in things that attracts them and then zaps them :(

I know when my big dogs lived outside the flies really liked their ears. We put vasiline on their ears and that seemed to work real good. We also hung those sticky fly traps all over their kennel inside and out. It worked some.

ttfn :)

we got the electric fly killers they get them everytime, only trouble is if a moth goes in it frightens the life out of you, our cavalier likes to catch them too, its the only time he got any life

The 8 month old Dogue britney is into catching fly's it is the first dog I have had that do's this, I try to stop her, as we had her out across the field the other day and there was lots of bee's after the clover and she kept lunging for them.Kept saying No very firmly, but still very worried as she's started going round the garden after them now.

we have also just bought an electronic fly killer and it is amazing how many flies you get caught in there.

A friend bought me a small electronic pest control for the caravan its small and plugs into a socket it very good i think it was from betterware I use that where the dogs are and it really works I have also used fly papers the sticky old fashioned ones try to hang them round the side so as not to gunge your hair up but they are very affective and safe.
But please dont use the vapona green house ones the yellow ones anywhere near animals my puppy died through chewing one of these which had fallen on the floor so be aware.

My 14 month GSD likes catching them too:D Trouble is she's rather big and shouldn't really be jumping all over the house after them:o ;)

flies are gross i agree. we've also got a bees nest in our garden which tilly keeps shoving her nose into silly girl.
As i type there's one buzzing around behind me! It's cos i like to leave the back door open for tilly to enjoy the sun.
The grossest thing is how you see one stamping around on a dog poo then is flies into your house!! I'm afraid then i get the raid out even though i'd rather not use it.
I agree citronella and lavender in a bottle rather than burner is quite good.
