i have read a lot on different threads about which puppy people are keeping from a litter. if our girl is pregnant my husband wants a bitch to show. my question is....what if she has all male puppies....are only one bitch which we dont fel is right for showing?. we only have room for a maximun of 3 dogs....so wouldnt keep a male just for the sake of it. would we get shot down for breeding a litter and not keeping one?. i have noticed the first thing people ask when a litter arrives is which one are you keeping.

If theres nothing suitable in this litter no one is going to judge you for not keeping one.Let them go and wait till next time.I have limited space and couldn't/wouldn't have something I wasn't prepared to keep for life so have to be set in my ideas of what I want and stick to it.
Hope she gives you what you want-if not good luck next time!!

thankyou archer.dont know why but it has been worying me for ages...:o..as i'm sure i once read a comment on here along the lines of *why on earth would you breed if you dont intend keeping one?*.

well I must say that is what I would tend to think, however you are intending to keep one if its the right puppy....so I think thats what really matters. A friend of mine has had 3 litters in her 20 years in the breed and everytime something goes wrong. She only ever has bitches and she is terribly unlucky as the bitch pups either die or are too plain to keep! A real dilema. :(
The main thing is that you are breeding for a puppy for yourself, that will improve your lines & stock (presumably?) So if nothing in the litter comes up to that criteria you will just have to try next time.

Hi Tanni,
As Archer and Sam have said, in fact you
are intending to keep one! But if there isn't one suitable in the litter then nobody should despise you for selling them all and trying again next year! As you say, you want a show-quality bitch. You may get all dogs, or a mixture but none of the bitches show-quality....the permutations are endless. You're setting out with the right aim, so please don't worry!

Tanni - just to support what others have said. The key is in your intention to keep one. This doesn't mean you have to. Here's hoping that there is what you are looking for in the litter:)
Good luck

I would not keep a male puppy if you want a female to show. When you have limited space you must be very specific about what dog/bitch will occupy that space. You would be far better off to place the pups in this litter if they are all male, hopefully some will go to show homes and not keep anything yourself. You must keep a clear mind and thus remember who that spot is for - a female.
Also just because could possiblely a female in the litter, don't automatically keep it unless she meets the breed standard and personality and requirements for a show dog. The puppy may be pet quality and not a show-potential prospect.

If I was to breed my bitch (I too have limited space) and (for instance) the bitch I kept had a missing tooth then I would certainly sell her on. I know someone who as Sam said- has always had trouble keeping her lines- she almost lost her line once - and only got it back through the 4th pick of litter bitch who a previous puppy purchaser let her use their *pet* bitch. Another I know again limited space etc- and she has ran two dogs on from her last litter- a dog and a bitch however only the dog is successful *show* material- she is therefore letting the bitch go on breeding terms- just in case for the future:)

I'm sure everything will go ok. I'm having a bit of a rest before my pups start weaning!!!
I just read your next post, about doing the contracts etc....I've just been doing the same....writing contracts, puppy info, receipts, then typing and printing them.....so boring, I wanna get back to my babies!!! lol
Take care, and, again, good luck.
