We have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who is perfect in most ways apart from when we have him out for a walk. He is fine and enjoys his walk unless there are other dogs around!! He barks continuously and if off his lead will follow any dog anywhere. We are thinking of taking him camping in spring/summer and are dreading the thought of being kicked off a campsite if another dog is there and he won't stop barking!!! Please help! Is there anything we can do?? Many thanks

We had two Cavaliers who were extremely noisy in the presence of other dogs. However they did tend to settle down after a while i.e if we had a visiting dog they would bark initially and then settle down, and similarly if another dog and owner was walking with us. We had several successful camping trips with them. It seems sensible to take precautions such as pitching your tent so that your entrance or main outside sitting area is not facing a main path to the facilities, thus minimising the amount of dogs walking past. There was one commercial camp site we went to which had a policy of putting all dog owners together on one field - I would avoid that sort of site, if possible. The Camping and Caravanning club sites are well appointed and stick very firmly to their rules about spaces between units. We have generally found site wardens and other campers to be reasonably friendly towards dogs, as long as they are kept under strict control. It would probably be a good idea to try a week-end camping trip first, and see how you get on.
