i would love to have archie sleep in bed with us sometimes but so far have managed to resist. well last night richard (husband) suggested we let him up and i said no - i have a feeling if he realises how nice it is up there he will never sleep in his own bed again - do you think this will be the case?
he comes up every morning for about 10 mins for a cuddle but i have never let him on the bed at night even just for a few mins in case he won't leave!
so what does everyone think? shall i try tonight or will i be making a rod for my back? i would dearly love to have him sleep with us but only on my terms and i when i want him too!!!!

Well, it very much depends on the dog... I can take Willis up with me (if my b'friends away) to bed, and he won't even think about wanting to go up again the next night, or if I go to bed early he comes up with me and then goes back down when Jon calls him (he's a dane so theres no room for anyone else). I didn't allow him to sleep up with me when he was tiny though...only once he was in the routine of sleeping downstairs :)

:) I let my Mini Schnauzer sleep on the bed...he just finds a spot and settles down and if we get a bit hot he goes in his own bed....as for the 14wk old pup we have now....Sometimes we let him sleep with us and he loves it...but i tend to find i dont sleep as well worrying if he is ok...so i prefere him to sleep in his bed..once he is bigger he will definatley be allowed on the bed.
Its up to you, if you dont mind then i think its nice, the dogs love it and its all bonding :)

Chloe, I have enough problems getting my husband to give me my rightful share of the duvet at night - I can't imagine what it must be like sharing your bed with a Dane!

theres enough wind and snoring from my partner so i don't think i will invite the boxer in for the night. a morning greet would be nice though.

Try sharing with two danes. ;)
Only jump on when requested by me or when have had 1 over the 8, so don't know until next morning and then too sore to shout. :D

two

Bad enough that we go on our narrowboat, and Willis (the wuss) climbs on a 3/4 bed with flat cushions and refuses to get off.

ok i've decide - i will let him sleep with us tonight! as he is such a teeny weeny dog at the mo i won't have the duvet sharing issues, although when we've let him up for a cuddle he jumps straight onto a pillow and won't shift! - i'm getting through more pillowcases than i ever thought possible.
still working on the snoring issues with husband - i find pinching his nose or a good dig in his back generally tends to shut him up!
thanks for the responses guys. :) am now looking forward to snuggling up with pup tonight.

Kujoe the 9 week old puppy comes up into the bedroom on and evening as that is were the computer is so he is allowed to come and play and sleep on the bed, but he go's back down to his cage (bed) for the night, last night was the first night that he has slept through, although still did not sleep as I worried that he was not alright as he was not makeing a noise, and like when you have babies that sleep for along time you keep going and checking that they are still breathing.I would be a bit worried about letting him sleep on the bed with us, this may in the future spoil the balance of the pack, with him thinking that he is an equal to you, so I would have a cuddle and then make it clear to him that his bed is maybe on the floor at the side of the bed, if there is let us say nuptal activity in the bed, it has been know that a dog can became jealous of the partner.or think that he has to stop you partner hurting you.with a bitch there is ther question of her seasons, been told all of a sudden that she is not a able to sleep on the bed because of the mess,I would say cuddles Yes definatly, but on the pups own bed to sleep.

When we got our first bully we spoilt her rotten and allowed her on the bed whenever she liked, my partner would often sleep in the spare room as Hilda had taken his space and he didn-t want to disturb her, now there are two and they are small dogs but seem to take up the whole of the bed. I have often woken to a dreadful smell only to open my eyes and find out it is Hilda backside right at my face and she can trump, boy do they smell. The only other problem is their snoring, they both snore like troopers, especially Gladis. I suppose we made a rod for our own backs, it's now a rush to see who can get to sleep before the dogs, but I wouldn-t have it any other way.

my girl isn't allowed upstairs but I did let her sleep on the bed for the first time in 11 months last night as she wasn't well. I carried her upstairs and covered her eyes :)

my mum's dog is great she sleeps in their bed sunday mornings and when my dad is working nights, but the rest of the time knows shes not allowed.
tilly can get a bit sulky if she gets told to get off the bed cos she is allowed on it in the morning when tony goes to work til i get up couple f hours later.
er.. dont wish to be personal... but i'd be freaked out if tilly was in bed with us and we were getting er, close...
lol thats up to you though!

nuptial delights eh - in my husband's dreams - ha ha ha !!!
oh you lot keep making me change my mind! think i will stick with cuddles in bed for the time being - archie already thinks he is way more important than he should do so maybe it will just give him the wrong idea.
happy friday everyone and hope y'all have a great weekend!

tee hee - can just picture your two doggies waiting for you to come home drunk and pass out then jumping on your bed - bet they are so pleased with themselves!

My dogs don't even come upstairs!
I've got to have somewhere that is (relatively) hair-free.

My dog sleeps on (and in if it is cold) our bed. But she is a Bichon so she doesn't take up much room. I love having her in on/in the bed, especially in the winter as she is nice and warm.
She still knows who is boss.

Same here, I think I would go mad with the extra hoovering!

Bramble is allowed up first thing in the morning and when I go to bed, until hubby comes up - then he sleeps in the kitchen with Tara. We have plain, white duvet covers and it is horrific how dirty they get just with him being on the bed for a few hours and he is short-coated (he is not allowed up if he has been in the garden and got wet/muddy). I can't imagine how dirty the bed would get if we had both dogs on all night and that is apart from the hair

I can never understand how people can let dogs sleep on the bed. I wouldn't dream of sleeping in my dog's basket, and I am positive that once you start you must find it unbelievably hard to revert back to a diffrent arrangement. So don't do it is my advice.
My affie slept with me from day 1...it hasnt given her ideas above her station, or dreams of dominance. She still knows who makes the decisions. she has her own bed next to mine, and uses it when she fancies:) I feel safe with her there. It is personal choice...nothing more.

I am the same with my Staffy Gus. He has slept upstairs since we brought him home . He is so well behaved :) .
Sometimes he goes back down to his crate to sleep in - is that a hint that I snore :D

mine sleep on the bed on their own blanket washed every day then back on the bed for the next night ours are two standard longhaired dachshunds they may have small legs but have the bodies of a rottweiler , i think it was a bad mistake and wish to revert back to them sleeping in their own bed. Also another point is that dachsies are odourless dogs they dont smell unless they roll in it :P it is difficult sleeping when four of you share the bed. and an appointment has to be made to use the bed for erm,,,other things.as to not offend the dogs..

Hehe - another reason why mine don't spend the night on the bed :D
Our dogs have no 'right' to go on furniture/beds. The younger one (13 months) just isn't allowed and she knows that and doesn't jump up. The older has 'privileges' and comes on the bed/sofa for a cuddle - but ONLY when we tell him to - he will just at the side and wait to be told. Tara 'might' be allowed up when she is older - WE haven't decided yet :) (And having seen how much she moults, I doubt whether she ever will be :D )

my dogs always used to sleep in the kitchen, but when we got our first springer that all changed, she would jump the baby gate on the kitchen door into the living room, and then wait for one of the kids to come down the stairs and open the door to the stairs as soon as it was open she was up like a flash, she wouldnt go up during the day just of a night, in the end we got so fed up of ttrying to keep her down the stairs of a night we let the dogs up the stairs. my lab and teh sprocker pup sleep on my bed and/or a blanket on the floor and the cavalier sleeps on my mums bed to avoid the problem of hairs through the house we have wooden floors, and hairs and dirt on the bed we have throws. its great in the winter but too hot in the summer but they normally end up getting off and laying on the floor if its hot.
its worked for me and mine with no problems, got to make sure they are clean first though!

My three girls (Labs) come up for a cuddle when I go upto bed and then again to say morning to me, but this is more like lots of kisses and cuddles then 'get out of bed mummy or daddy and come and feed us cause our throats feel like they have been cut !' :)
Have only let them sleep with us over night when Mars was PTS and we thought they would want to stay with us and cuddle. No they came up, had a cuddle, and went back to their own beds and snored the night away !
