Anyone have some basic tips on training a lurcher (g/hound x pointer). I have successfully trained a few GSDs but my methods aren't having an effect wiht my new 2 year old rescue lurcher. He doesn't respond to food and his attention span is too short, he just gets all excited and bonces around. I want him to enjoy training but I also want him to concentrate and realise he has a job to do. Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Hi,

Lurchers can be difficult, it's the hound in them and as yours if G/hound X Pointer, he is likely to be hard work. Greyhounds can be trained, but can also be very stubborn and Pointers and renowned for being a bit mad.

I would suggest using a toy which is made from rabbit skin and put it on a string, so you can drag it along the ground or swing it through the air to get his attention.

He may not know how to play, as many rescue dogs who have not played as puppies, do not know how to. Your first job it to teach him how to play, then you can use this as his reward instead of treats.

Lurchers need a firm hand, but you still will need to be very nice and encouraging and make it all fun. :)
