Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Brown Dobe w white chest markings

I have a beautiful 15 week brown Dobe female who I would not trade for the world. If I was thinking of showing her would the fact that she has a white mark on her chest mean that I could not ? She is a pedigree with KC Reg papers and was not bought for show but as a family pet but she is so pretty and elegant I am thinking of maybe seeing how she would enjoy the show ring......

Hi,
I just looked at the Breed Standard for the Dobermann, and it says that white markings are highly undesirable.

So you'd be best advised to keep her just as a pet. (She's still the best dog, anyway! ;) )

Hi Richard

How big is the white mark - if it is streak or patch then you may not do well as it is a fault and one all judges can see, however faulty their eyesight may be otherwise <g> her but if it is just a few hairs there is no reason why you should try not showing her.

The Companion dog shows are a good place to start showing and the all-rounders who judge them will not have the in-depth knowledge of every breed so once she is six months try these ?

The mark is about an inch long but about 2 mm wide ( I suppose I could dye her hair !!!!) Maybe I should think about obedience or agility shows ?

Hi Richard

With luck this may shrink as she grows (ask her breeder if it is the same size, bigger or smaller, comparable to her size, than when she was born), otherwise it sounds as if it may be a bit obvious. You could dye it but I would not recommend it - if you were caught then you would probably never be able to show again as it is considered cheating and the KC tend to take a dim view.

Dobes love to use their brains so why not have a go at showing, obedience and agility when she is old enough.

Hi Richard,
My own brown dobie bitch Taz had a white mark appear on her chest shortly after I got her. I was quite stressed about it at the time as I had bought her to show. It did however shrink as she got older! She is 19 months old now and only has 7 stray white hairs left. With any luck your girls white may shrink.
Good luck with her.

I have never before heard of a white mark "appearing" - they are there at birth and then often shrink (like the odd white toe or toenail which normally disappears within a few weeks) but not the other way around

Yes she has had it since birth and her mother had one as well but you hardly noticed , as my pup is growing so quickly it will probably appear smaller the bigger she gets. There is a show coming up locally in my area I might just take her along and see how she does. At the end of the day she was not bought for show so I am not too bothered , to me she is the most beautiful Dobe anyway ( I have had Dobes in the past with the most excellent pedigrees and colouring , but none have been so well behaved and gentle at such an early age......)

Thankyou for your comments

Richard
