Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Spaniels- sweet or snappy?
- By guest [gb] Date 12.06.03 08:52 UTC
My partner and I do a lot of rough shooting and have a lovely lab who is being trained at the moment. My partner is very much the boss with the dog who absolutely adores him. Of course I am wildly jealous and we are discussing taking on another dog, one which could be trained by me!
We love the temprament of our lab and wondered if a spaniel would have the same sweet nature, our neighbour has a very grouchy cocker, sometimes my neighbour has to phone her husband to move the dog because he is too snappy. Is this extreme loyalty to one person a spaniel thing, a cocker thing or a my neighbours dog thing?
If anyone could recommend a suitable gundog a would be grateful.

Hi

Spaniels are the sweetest of dogs :D :D but I am biased as I have three Show type Cocker Spaniels.

As with any dog they need to be brought up correctly and I think the problem your neighbour has with hers is that she lets him/her get away with murder. With Cockers if you give them an inch they will take a mile and can be very stubborn.

The Working Cockers are very popular with Rough Shooters have a look at All Things Cocker Spaniel there are some Working Cocker Breeders listed. You could also contact Field Trial Secretary of The Cocker Spaniel Club Mrs P Rhodes (Pixiebarn) Tel: 01273 890701.

could you enlighten me on how you came about a cavalier flushing? cavaliers a toy dogs i know they are very atheleic but flushing? perhaps you mean a springer, springer were bred primaryilly for flushing game put are now used for retrieving too.
i like spaniels and they are a good compliment to labs, but i have recently come accross pointers, when these work they are brilliant.

my cocker is very very sweet, in my experience it is more the training that makes a cocker snappy. the only time my cocker even barks is when she feels threatened and is trying to protect me but this isn't very often as she only barks when necessary. get a cocker- im sure you won't regret it!
