Hi Colin,

As there is so many not so reputable breeders around I urge all enquires to contact the WHWT club . Shirley Hooper is the Secretary on the English club and can be contacted on 01963 440493 , you may want to come along to a show and meet and talk to people as most breeders will keep 1 -2 for show and the rest go to nice homes. Most are happy to put you on a waiting list and most good breeders willhappily pass on others details.

Get references for the breeder. Check out as much as you can. Don't fall for the KC paperwork will be forwarded to you carry on as seems to popular again. If in doubt walk away.

Ask the breed clubs if they have heard of breeders you find outwith their recommendations.

Or if need be post here as there are a few westie folk on the board who I am sure will help steer you clear of naughty people. Be careful of internet breeders lists whilst most are genuine there may be a few not.

Sorry if it sounds like a rant but advice worth taking on board.

Hi Colin, I agree totally with Pam, there are a lot of what we call "iffy" breeders out there, can really pull the wool over your eyes, with loads of promises, another one dont fall for, if you go to see a litter and you ask to see the mum of the pups is: weve taken her away as she is not feeding them, or she is at a relataves house the pups were getting too much for her, not true ive a litter of nearly 7wk old pups (all booked) and mum still gives them a feed maybe only once a day and plays with them. This could mean that if mum is not present that they are doing what we call dealing, buy puppies in and sell them on , so they dont breed them and dont have the mum of the pups either. If anyone says that they will forward the k.c. reg docs (beware of Dog Lover Registration worthless piece of paper) get a letter fromt he breeder stating k.c.registration has been applied for, if they refuse, walk away. You will probably have to wait for a litter being born, buy some good books on the breed and do some research any reputable breeder will be happy to discuss all this with you.
