what is the difference between a horsecoat and a brushcoat? and which has the better temprement and which generally wins better at shows?

Hi Guest

The best person to advise you is probably Dizzy (don't let the name fool you :) ). Hopefully she'll be along later with some advice for you.

hello guest--you need to read and meet pei , also some of the breeders to get an opinion of the breed, theyre a poweful and very stubborn breed, they cant be trusted off a lead [most of them] theyd do off in a non secure garden, theyre not meant to be too good with livestock-but as i dont have any i can only tell you what is written------they do have health issues, the hock /fevers etc, cant be tested for, its said to be in the breed throughout and as theres no test for it then no-one can predict which pups might go on to have symtoms.--read the club website, also the sharpei search engine, the health issues are explained on there, a recent found problem in the breed is luxating lenses, although fairly new and as yet not wide spread-some breeders for all having been told that its now been found in there lines, sadly still are breeding on from those lines
pei are fabulous to own, love kids and are very clean in the house. when you buy a puppy make sure you meet the dam, the standard asks for aloof, this isnt an excuse for a bitch either showing fear, or trying to attack you,
as for the horsecoat verses brush-ive owned and shown both, i find the horse coat usually more basic in its attitude, much more warey and suspiscious, they often dont have the head or substance of the brush coat---i personally find the brush coat in general much easier to live with, chunkier and a bit more outgoing-they tend to do better in the ring, but to be fair weve only had a few really good horsecoats in the ring, ---both the club and the search engine can be found on the links on my website, click on my name and youll get the addie to myself-and the website , your welcome to mail me at home with any further questions
