hi,
i posting this question for a friend of mine.
she recently brought 2 lurcher puppies one from "Carl Williams" and another from "David Hancock".
now she has been advised that she can worm her puppies on Panacur (the one thats ment for horses).
she did not want to ask her vet as she seems to think he would say no anyway.
but i worm my dogs on Panacur granuals for dogs, and she has been told that they have exactly the same ingredients,so has she been given the wrong advice???
i have said to her not to give it her dogs until she gets proper advice about this.
so since she came around for coffee we have been arguing about this.
so are the two worming products the same and would it be safe for her to go ahead with this advice thats been given???i think not,but i could be wrong

jane

I'd say definitely ask the vet. A friend's dog got hold of some leftover horse wormer and it caused fitting for some time. :(

No Idea, but will say that DH has breen breeding his line of lurchers for more years than I would care to recall & has an excellent reputation, so although i am not saying he is bound to be right, I am saying that if its worked for him then I guess its probably ok.(Even if its not right!)

I use the Panacur for dogs and there are two strengths available 2.5% and 10%. They are very definately for dogs/cats.
Would never consider giving my boys horse wormer. Maybe it is just a misunderstanding as Panacur make both types - I read it twice the first time to make sure.
Just to lighten things up here - picture this:-
I am 6 months pregnant, dressed in black and about to use Panacur liquid for the first time.
Take required dose into syringe
Put into mouth of black labrador and inject.
Labrador shakes head, sneezes, and runs down the hall spitting.
I am covered in white spots
The dog is covered in white spots
The pine panelling in the hall is covered in white spots, as is the mirror.
Two hours later, having cleaned up.........
It's mch easier to stick it in the food with something really tasty:O

You are correct Jane, I did presume that it was one of the breeders, namely DH, that gave your friend this advice.
I have known DH for a number of years, and have to say that there are MANY people I know, who I shudder to think of the way they live, however they are capable of producing excellent quality dogs, and so I am prepared to overlook the somewhat squalid conditions they endure. I wouldnt hesitsate to buy stock from DH & know many a fine working lurcher that has come from his lines. I would rather buy from those sort of breeding lines than one kennel I visited a few years ago where everything was like a show home & the dogs were like automatons...all lined up in their expensive luxury kennels. But thats another story!
definitley DO NOT use the panacur for horses, horse wormer are a lot stronger than dog wormers and kill alot more than just round worm , there is only one horse wormer that kills tapeworm and this has to be given in a double dose to horses. horse wormers are that much stronger i dont even use the for my goats, i use the over the counter wormer for my goats as these are not as strong.
if your friend is worried about going to the vets for the wormer most horse wormer stockist also supply panacur for dogs and strongid p for dogs, my local stockist also stocks the new panacur favorites where as my vet doesnt yet, the stockist need to do a course on worming and have a license to sell the wormers as they are classed as POM medicenes (perscription only medicene)
hope this helps

hi guys....remember alot of dog drugs are not species specific.......but considering most horses wiegh 1000 lbs or more they need to be redosed for dogs.but they are they same drug, heck people take that levamisole that they make for sheep because its cheaper than the human form..............but if you only have one dog its better to get the dog stuff,i use the one percent ivomec for heartworms because its cheap and easy to dilute to the proper dose.........and strongid is flavored because its made for people with pinworms...ugh

Just a quick reminder to everyone please remember ivomec isn't suitable for collies

We buy Panacur dog or horse or Drontal tablets freely from our local Manor pharmacy you do not need a prescription you can buy many products from this outlet you'd be suprised just how much isn't prescription only.

Hi there
Just a quick note I was told by a vet (a friend) to save myself money and buy equine panacur as it is exactly!!!! the same I found it quite easy to work out the doses from what it says on the bottle if you know your dogs weight it doesn't take a rocket scientist.

We worm our bitches from day 40 of pregancy and use this as do many of my friends and top Boxer breeders and have never had any problems the vet showed me the ingredients and I assure you apart from the taste (it is apple and cinnamon flavour) it is identical

Panacur 10% suspension is exactly the same for dogs and livestock, it is just cheaper in 500ml or 1 litre, 5 litre quantities. I get it by the liter from one of the Canine Chemists with a print out of the doasge for cats and dogs, but the label shows the doage for sheep and cattle.
Interestingly enough the doage for dogs is 1ml per kg bodyweight, but for shepp it is 1ml per 10kg of bodyweight. Does this mean that sheep and dogs metabolise things differently, or that the farm animal gets the minimum effective dose, adn we pet owners are conned into giv eing the maxiimum effective/safe dose?
Hi B/less, or could it be sheep are for human consumption, therefore are liable to more stringent control re chemicals not entering the human food chain & dogs ( at least in Europe are not)? Would like an answer to that one tho!!

I doubt it christine, there is a statutory withdrawal period for all medicines/wormers so that it has completely evacuated the system prior to slaughter for human consumption.
Thanks Sam, so it`s either sheep have different metabolic rates or we are being conned then???
Mind you, can`t say I`m conned anymore because I stopped using wormers nearly 2yrs ago & my lot still tested negative for worms this past Easter time! :)

'Ere where can I get it in 500ml or 1l qtys??
I can only get little bottles round here.
Julia & Hooligans

K9 Chemist, Tel. 01228 791230, in the Dog World advert shows 500ml Panacur 10% suspensionas costing £35.25. I paid £55 for a litre when I last ordered, it has a long shelf life to 2006.

Thats rather better than £10 for 100ml. :)
I think I'll just pop off and do that.
Incidentally our vet charges £18 for 100ml!!!!!:(

Flippin heck, they only charge £12 something I think for 100ml

What with your advice saving me £15 and finding out that I can save 11p per tub on Naturediet if I buy direct (£2 per case, and no extra carriage either).
I think I'll have to go and lie down!!!
Julia & Hooligans
I don't know about the Equine version but the 10% Cattle and Sheep Pancur is the same as the canine one (and, if you have a multi dog household and can use it all before the expiry date much cheaper). My vet mentioned this and I also rang the company to check (who then sent me leaflets so I did not have to keep the wrap-around bit that came with the dog wormer so I could check the doses.)

I've used panacur for sheep etc since the early 80's to worm my parrots twice a yr, had to get the dilution right, we didn't have a choice about it as there weren't any Avian wormers around at the time.
