Topic Dog Boards / General / Best/safest way to carry a puppy

I've started to take my puppy Cam out for short "walks" (he's carried - he hasn't had any jabs yet) up and down our street, and in the park when it's quiet. I'd always understood that the safest/most comfortable way to carry a dog was to put one arm around his chest and the other sort of looped under his bum, supporting most of his weight. Thing is, this doesn't seem comfortable for him (considering we're out for 10/15 minutes at a time) - he seems to prefer extending his front legs and some of his weight over my left arm (which is sort of cradled in front of me), with my other arm wrapped round and under his back end holding him against me. Does this sound ok, and how do other people carry their pups?

Thanks

If you're supporting most of his body especially his legs i'm sure he's fine :) i guess it's hard to describe how to hold the pup, it's an instinctive thing, which i htink you've figured out if he seems comfy.
Enjoy ur walks

You won't be carrying him for long, believe me. Taz had her jabs early which meant she could go down at just over 11 weeks. I could hardly carry her at 10 weeks, certainly not for any distance. I took her into town once, big mistake, we parked up and walked to the bank, sorry I walked to the bank she lorded it in my arms. I was knackered by the time we got back. My arms took 4 days to recover, they were really stiff:D Anyway I am pretty sure I carried her the same way you describe, wouldn't like to carry her now. Though she had her first experience of a lift today. Hmmm, she didn't like it. I had to lift her over the gap, to get in, she threw herself out at the other end, and then I had to do the same on the way back down. We stopped work at the insurance company for at least half an hour. They loved her, and wanted me to leave her so she could be the Company dog. Hmmmm I thought for a nano second but said no:D

Lol Bev. How old was Taz when I met her the other week? I seem to remember she's exactly twice Cam's age (he's 8 weeks today).

Cam did well on his "walk" today - met up with the neighbour and her three children, who gave him a bit of quiet fuss. This was not only good for his socialisation but also for the kids - apparently one of them is very scared of dogs, so I've invited him around next week for a supervised bonding session. You've gotta grab that socialisation when you can!

Off to the vets for a check-up tomorrow. He sounded lurv-ely when I spoke to him on the phone, so it's going to have to be a full make-up job. :D

Jo, Taz will be 5 months next week, so probably nearer 12 weeks older than Cam. Yes lots of little hands touching him is really good. I took Taz to school loads of times and she got loads of attention. Which vets are you using?

Grange Veterinary Hospital. I rang round a few and they were the only ones that didn't try the hard sell with pet insurance and listened to my concerns about vaccinations.

Cam's so cute Bev ... he had a totally mad half hour this afternoon then crashed out on Richard's/my knee all evening. He snores so loudly!

I know in my email to you earlier I said either Saturday or Sunday was good this weekend ... but how would you be fixed for Sunday (any time?) Richard might be going to York on Saturday 'tis all and as you may remember I'm still learning to drive :o

Hi Jo,
I am pretty sure Sunday will be fine, I will just double check and then I will e-mail you with my address.
Look forward to meeting Cam.
