I'm not sure what they are like around children, but if I were you I would go for something less high maintenance with a baby on the way :)

Huskies take a lot of excersise and grooming and CAN NOT be let off the lead. That said, my 2 are 9 years old and the kids are 13, 10 and 7, so I would say yes you can. They like loads of attention and love going to school to pick up the kids, then they can have even more fuss!!

Why can't you let them off the lead??

I think its because they are one of the least "domesticated" of the dog breeds. They have a lot of wild instinct left and tend to just scarper every time you let them off. Their prey drive kinking in I think. My friend got a warning from the police who had to return her two twice when she experimented with letting them off
Not they're older she can let her female off but never the male, and the female still goes if she sees anything more interesting

Ah I see.
thanks.

hi rachael, i
would strongly advise your freind to keep them on leads. she knows they will run away if they want, yet she still takes the risk with their lives and lets them off??!! please tell her to keep them on leads for their own safety as i would hate to see them injured or even worse killed. also tell her a lot of sibes are being stolen and sold on and hers will be at a even greater risk if they are run off on their own.

hi julia,
you can not trust then off lead as they have been bred for hundreds of years to run AWAY from your commands, no good having a sled dog that runs toward you :) ! they also are very independent and dont have the need other breeds have to be constantly near their owner. they are quite happy to be off exploring on their own as they are also very very curious. they also have a very high prey and if they see a cat/squirrel/rabbit ie any small furry or even sheep they click into hunt mode and the chase is on. combine this with the fact they can RUN very very fast for very very long distance, they can be easily out off ear shot and sight within SECONDS! when in running mode, they also dont stop for anything, that includes roads, cars or trains and will frequently be killed in such accidents. bottom line is they can not be trusted off lead in an unenclosed area. if they want to run they will and will only come back if and when they feel like,
