what is the general concensus of Open Registries?

I take it you are talking health register? If so two things spring to mind.

1/ It would be great, you would be able to see at a glance, not only the stud dog of your dream's hips and eyes but also his ancestors and prodigy!

2/ As the health schemes stand at the moment it would not work. People with poor lines would simply not test.

As some of you know, I am co organiser of eye testing sessions and a very well known person in a breed came in and asked to have her dog tested without the paper work being done. When I asked why she replied that if her dog failed she would not bother!!! Needless to say I told her it was paperwork or nothing!

Yes, I am talking health registries. How many are there in the UK etc. In the USA people are coming to terms with them as they realise that many gene pools are so limited that there is no choice, but it appears that the UK people (in general) do not realise the extent of some problems.

Please note this post is not here to antagonise people but to try and instigate productive discussion

Some breeds do have a free interchange of info. Bernese for example (As I'm told by friends within the breed) Labradors hips are recorded in a booklet which is available for a small charge as for other breeds, I'm not aware or anything but not being in those breeds I would not get to hear. All tested Hips and Eyes are published in the Kennel Club Breed Record Supplement so it is all available to interested parties.

Personally, as I intimated in my last post, I don’t believe this is the real problem in this country. The real problem is one of education. Educating people to know what health tests are needed in the breed they are interested in and insisting to see the test results before buying a puppy. As you will have seen on here, we always tell prospective breeders to test but it is only the puppy buying public who can make people test.

Regards, John

PS To admin. Already did that! ;) another site in the USA I like is http://www.offa.org Great for Labradors!

In my breed all the Breed Records supplement info is reproduced in the national clubs Yearly Journal.

Also it is possible to ring the KC about any registered dog to find out it's hip and eye test results.

It would be nice if these results were accesible like the OFA ones in the states. To search their database you canuse a dogs registration number, or name, or part of a name. If recorded the results for the dog, it's parents and siblings wil come up. Most useful.

In my breed all the health results reported in the BRS are also reported in the Stud Book plus any other health results (with Certificates) that are forwarded to the author. Open registeries can only benefit the breed as far as I am concerned.

I would like to know more about the setup of Rex's site - a pedigree site has recently been put up for my breed and some health results are on-line elsewhere but I like the idea of having certain information password protected so that you have more idea who is accessing the information.

As far as I am aware the owners have to pay to have their results listed on the OFA site. When I received my vWD DNA results from one of the American companies they wanted me to pay $35 to list the results. The OFA site is much more useful than the AKC site for researching pedigrees (apart from the differing spellings of so many of the dogs)

How do you mean, certain information password protected Christine? I would have thought that people need to have access or the benefits of any scheme would be limited. Also paying to list the results on the site would surely mean that a lot of people would simply not bother.

I would have thought a payment to access the info would be a better way of financing it??

Best wishes, John

Hi John

I feel that some people use the data to find suitable mates so that they can clain a certain status for their pups without having to do any testing themselves. Whilst there is nothing inherantly wrong in this it still feels as though they are somehow cheating whichever breed they own.

Would you pay to access health or pedigree information or both if they were available on line for your breed?

Christine, feel free to email me privately if you wish, I am willing to discuss this with anyone. after several attempts at trying to set it up where it suited most people (about 2 years) I have come to the present format. yes it has peed a lot of people off, but it is a longterm project that will not go away.

John
I think Christine refers to the the Health Database where people submitting information have a choice as to whether or not it is listed in the public domain, but on just the pedigree database instead which is only viewable by people who have either paid to get onto it or by people who have become members by submitting information. there are 4 or 5 different dbases on the site, all accessible by Members but not the general public, ie; the members database has a search facility going back to approx 1920, where the public one only goes back to the sire and dam.

I dont know how others on here feel and am not sure if I am going to be breaking the forum rules, but i have 'spoken' to Christine privately and made her an offer which i am willing to give to anyone who would like to open up a Health register for their own breeds. For more info please contact me privately.
