We took our lab camping for the first time this weekend, and the poor guy got covered in mosquito bites. He has tons of red circles and welts on his belly and under his front legs. They don't seem to be bothering him at all (he's not licking or scratching the area), but I'm a little worried. The vet is closed, but does anyone have any suggestions? Should I just wait for them to clear up? The circles are bright red.

Are you sure they are mosquito bites? They usually itch like mad! Here in Australia we have to give our dogs Heartworm prevention tablets as mosquitos lay their eggs into the dogs bloodstream, they travel to the heart and hatch into a mass off worms which can of course eventually kill the dog.Do you have the same problem where you live?

Yes, I give him medicine for that every month, but I don't think it would be that because that can take a few weeks or months to show symptoms, and it wasn't there in the morning when we left for camping, but it was there after we'd been there for a few hours (and the bugs were viscious). Maybe it's posion ivy or oak? But again, he's not itching or licking at it. And he's eating normally. . .

Now I am very worried! I've been searching the Internet because I'm afraid that he has fleas -- although wouldn't he be itching? He hasn't been at all. The marks on him are red rings, some of them grouped together, not raised at all. In a matter of a few hours he went from having nothing to having probably 30 or 40 circles on him.

Aren't red rings a sign of ringworm? Flea bites tend to be red lumps rather than rings ...

No, it doesn't look like ringworm (according the pictures I've seen). His skin is not crusty or infected-looking. It looks as if someone took a red magic marker and drew some circles on his belly!

It sounds like some sort of allergy. What did he sleep on when you were camping?

He slept in the tent with us, on our sleeping bags. But I noticed the marks after we'd only been there for around 2 hours, so it must have happened as soon as got there. The bugs were atrocious, though.

Edited later:
It seems to be fading a bit -- maybe I shouldn't worry?
