Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Toilet training our 6 month old puppy

We have had our poodle puppy Abby since she was 3 months old, we trained her to go to the toilet outside in our back garden through the dog flap but she is still weeing at least once a week overnight inside the house. We know some nights she does go up the garden as there are parcels left there that were not there before, we do not have any other pets. During the day she has access to the whole house but at night only the kitchen, garage and garden. She also does it around the same area though we have scrubbed the carpet on a number of occasions. Should we be telling her off during the day? What can we do to stop this? Is anyone else having the same problems? She is still very much a puppy and enjoys playing with her toys, playing in the garden, nibbling our fingers and giving us loads of kisses. In all other respects she is a very good girl and loves us very much.

Thanks for listening, I hope you can help, the Cook family

If you watch her you will get to know by her actions when she needs the tiolet . For example when Gus was a young puppy he would always do a circling motion and we knew he wanted a "number 2 ".
When you think she needs the toilet pick her up and put her outside until she goes an and then when she has done something , praise her lots and lots .Make a big fuss and give her a treat of some sort.
What do you clean the carpet with as sometimes doggy odours which we may not be able to smell can linger .
I'm sure there will be more advice along soon :)

hi,
I've heard that some cleaners smell of doggie urine, i've found this great product in tesco in the pet section specially designed for getting rid of the odour. It s called hartz stain and odour remover for carpets and upholstery. It says that the puppy wont go there again.
My 4 1/2 month old puppy has now stopped all accidents in the house, but even now i congratualte him everytime he goes out side.

No please don't tell her off during the day for something she did overnight. She won't make the connection even if you take her to the offending area and she will just become afraid.
If she's going in the same spot then she can still smell her urine in the area. You need to deodorise it fully. She's being very good using the dog flap and going outside as much as she does :) you should be proud of her progress so far.
Help her out. Take her outside as late as possible before you go to bed or get up and pop her out so she has an opportunity to empty her bladder last thing. Don't just rely on the dog flap - work with her. Once she gets used to staying dry through the night the penny should drop that she wees outside too.
