We just got a new lab puppy(15 months) last night. The owners said she was trained but I can not get her to do anything. She is very hyper which I expected, but I don't know how to calm her down. She seems to be a good dog. My daughters like her except when she gets their toys. I looked for a kong but found something simular and she was not interested even with peanut butter in it. Also my 10 year old dalmation (who generally likes other dogs) does not particularly like the lab. I am at a loss as I have never trained a dog. My husband trained our dalmation and my parents any dog before that!!!

Is there some way to calm her down or teach her to not run and jump in the house? This may not be possible but any advice would be great!!
Thanks

Hi,
I suggest you buy a copy of 'The Rescue Dog' by Gwen Bailey. Your lab may not be a rescue, but it's very different taking on an older dog rather than a small puppy.

Basically, though, until she has settled in you should treat her very much as you would a small pup - because she is in a new and strange environment just like they are. Give her several weeks to settle in, and don't let her off the lead outside your garden until she knows where her home is.

Why is she being rehomed at this age? Perhaps you could register as a member with us and you'll be able to ask more questions.

As Jeangenie says, you need to treat her as a young puppy at the moment. She has come into a strange home where she knows no one or anything. It's all so strange for her and for that matter, your other dog. She is probably a bit lively for your Dalmatian at the moment and he (she?) possibly does not know how to take it. Friendships in dogs takes a time to develop just as it does in humans.

Best wishes, John
