Topic Dog Boards / General / Microchip Scanning

Is it just me or has anyone else never had their dog scanned for a microchip even though they had shelled out for one of these things.

Thought the idea was that they were there to be checked?

Does make me wonder if there is a point. takes 2 ticks to do!

Harry has his checked if I ask them to......but then they know me and they know my dogs.

My vets' surgery routinely scan strays (dogs and cats) that are brought in, so that's the main thing.

Doubt whether vets would think that they should do it automatically. It's not a medical thing really. Ours will do it if asked, so that is all that matters :)

Hardly the point I was trying to make.(Sorry that sounds snappy)

Know for a fact round our way that the pikeys are nicking dogs left right and centre, to sell on and to use in crossing to make nasty fighting dogs.

Just thought a major part of the scheme was to scann the dogs, I have been to 3 or 4 different vets in the area since Bailey had her chip fitted about a year ago and not one of them has scanned her!

Thought that especially with it being such an "Issue" where we are it might occur to the vets to actually check up once in a while.

Have you suggested it to them, Johnny? (And that they ought to check for tattoos while they're about it!)
:)

Hardly my point, I am happy that the chip is there, and that the chip works, but what if I were of the less reputable K9 owner/stealership and I took my mutt to the vets cause it had swallowed me rolex and sygnet rings.

If the vet scanned the dog, wouldnt it be able to tell him that the dog was nicked, or at least that the current person wasnt the real owner?

If the vet scanned the dog, all it would give him was the number of the chip. But if he then makes a call to establish the ownership of the dog, and it's not the person who's turned up with it, sadly there nothing he can legally do about it. :( Amazingly it's down to the fact that the person presenting the animal is the client and the vet must legally keep details confidential.

There was an outcry in the press about this recently, but that is the law as it stands.

You really expect every vet to scan very dog that comes to see them? We had a dog which had been chipped and even then they couldn't find the chip when they scanned the dog. Apparently they move about quite a bit.
Personally I would be very angry if I went to the vets, told them my dog wasn't chipped, and had to wait another 5-10 minutes (just incase it had moved) while they looked for a chip which wasn't even there.

I don't see how you can be offered any advice other than "why not ask your vet"!! JG is right - Data Protection, the vet couldn't notify you.

all my dogs are chipped as pups, my larger animals are too, its only my cats that arent chipped, but then if you lose your cat only to find that somebody else has your cat and has claimed it as theirs if you go to court to get ownership of the cat back you can only get the chip back as it is only the chip that actually belongs to you! in the eyes of the law cats do not actually belong to anybody, they are free spirits. Dogs on the other hand are different, if you find that somebody else has your dog you can take then to court to get ownership of the dog and the chip back.
Funny old world really.
I have the vet check the chips each time we go to see him as a matter of course as the chip in our springer moved round to her ribs so we wanted to keep check on it.
