Hi All,
We are going to be getting a Dane puppy soon. Should we make sure that he's vaccinated before we get him from the breeder? We already have Baillie, our retriever, who's vaccinations are all up to date. But I've heard that the puppy can still catch something! :( as Baillie could pass it on and he wouldn't catch it or show any signs because of his healthy immune system?
Is this right? Some breeders sell their puppies fully vaccinated and others don't! It'd be great if you could give me any advice as I don't want to put the puppy at risk.
Thanks
Sharon

I've found that puppies sold at 8 weeks are unvaccinated because many vets won't vaccinate till 10 weeks with the second jab at 12 weeks. So that would be 4 weeks less socialisation and integration into your household for the pup if you waited till it had received all its jabs......

Hi Sharon,
It is worth asking around as our vet does the first jab at 8 weeks second at 10 then depending on your area(risk of disease)the pup can go out a week after that at 11 weeks, she said this is a relatively new development. You will be itching to go out by then you lucky thing ,I love great Danes.Just out of interest how big is an 8 week puppy and what colour are you getting?

Hi All,
Thanks for the replies. When Baillie was a puppy we got him at 8 weeks and he'd already had his first injections with his second at 10 weeks. That was 6 years ago, so I wasn't sure if things had changed. But I knew that the other dogs belonging to the breeder would be around the puppies, so I wasn't sure how much of a problem it would have created!
For Hazel - Hi, I don't know really as this will be my first Dane, but I'm sure Grace, Carla (my new confidantes!!! :) :) :) ) will be around to let us know shortly. A fair size I imagine!! :) I am getting a blue.
Speak to you all soon,
Sharon

to get a fully vaccinated pu you would have to wait until it was at least 12 weeks old (as the second vaccination isn't given until at least 10 weeks).

As long as your dog is vaccinated then your pup will be fine, after all the breeders othre dogs will usually be going out and about their own business the same as Bailie.

Brainless,

Maybe you could shed some light on this vaccine question.

As long as our family have had dogs, they were vaccinated at 8 weeks and 10 weeks then allowed out for walks at 12 weeks, always 14 days between jabs and always 14 days after. Both the vets I use still use this method.

I recently and commonly have seen advice oe people mentioning that puppies can be taken out for walks a few days after second jab.. Even to ringclass etc.

I can't really understand this and I personally still practice the original theory about being safe than sorry.

Has this something you have seen to change over the years.

A lot of people seem to be waiting till 10 weeks also for first.

Just wondered what your thoughts were and what you do..

Hi Pam...

thought I'd reply...all of the dogs I've had as pups have been vaccinated at 10 and 12 weeks....then allowed out 2 weeks after.

I have heard from people, and even from some vets, that even after the first vaccination they are quite safe....but I really don't buy into this, and I'll always stick to the tried, tested and safe method!!

Take care

All my dogs were vaccinated at 8 weeks then again at 10 weeks and then at 11 weeks i take them out, and this was the same with the litter of pups that my lab had
