Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Testicle!!

Hi

My seven month old Standard Schnauzer (Jensen) has currently only one testicle. My vet has told me to wait for a couple of months to see if nature takes it course. If it does not, he advises to remove both or leave just the one good one!!

I would like to get some idea of other peoples decisions on this matter and any affects to the dogs?

Many thanks

Allyson

I think an undescended testicle can result in cancer

Testicles are designed to be held outside the body. If they are retained, then they are hotter than they should be. The theory is that makes them more likely to become cancerous, and Vets usually recommend castration. However I groom many dogs with one or even no testicles who have not been castrated and in my experience, none have had a problem, and all have good temperaments - another reason for castration as the hormone balance can be upset.
In my breed, dogs can be over a year old before their testicles descend.
Castration can effect metabolism and weight needs to be controlled. It can also change the texture of the coat, making a course coat soft and more prolific.
It's a decision that only you can make Allyson, but be patient. Good luck.

My mother's Golden had this problem. She waited till he was a year old, then he had the undescended one removed and the normal one left in situ. He's had absolutely no problems healthwise, and is now 11 years old and still very fit.

By not being castrated his coat hasn't been affected at all, and he has still developed into a normal masculine dog.

So from my experience that is what I would do.

Hope this helps.

Certainly is a cause for concern isn't it? But at least you now know that the problem isn't uncommon. I'd be tempted to wait it out until he's a year old before taking advice again.

I remember being slightly taken aback when Hugo's testicles wouldn't stop growing! He even walks slightly wide legged at the back to avoid 'teste chafing' although of course, he might just be putting it on for the benefit of any girls in the vicinity. I have noted young 'lads about town' adopt a similar walk of a Saturday night whilst chatting up females.

oh while we are on this topic..my 12wk old mini schnauzer only has one testicle...this has been out for about 4 weeks now and the other has not appeared.....does anyone know the ususal time it takes or space between one being out and two?

No doubt the vet will examine him again when he goes for his second injection this week but i was just curious.

Thanks, Roxanne

Thanks for your help, Jensen is currently very happy with just the one "swinger", at least he isn't suffering from chaf!!!!

I work with protection and detection dogs, one of our rottis 'tefa' had a retained testicle, the vet advised leaving it til he was a year old, by the time the dog was 8mths old he couldnt sit down or lay down comfortably, this was due to the retained testicle applying pressure in his abdomen and causing pain and discomfort, once he was casturated and he had recovered he was able to continue training, he is now a protection dog.
i would recommend having him casturated as soon as you can
