Hi all just wanted to know if anyone as had similar problems.My bitch had her first litter 14 days ago and ive just noticed scabs on some of the pups ive checked for fleas and couldnt find anything but was wondering could it be because ther now crawling about and there climbing all over each other ther nails are very sharp and i thought they may be scratching each other or could it be the mum shes not very careful when she lies down always standing on them could she be scratching them? look forward to your thoughts thanx mel...

Hi Mel,
It's very likely that these are scratches from the puppies' nails. They become quite fearsome weapons in a very short time! I suggest you get a pair of nail clippers and clip off the curved tip of each nail and see if the scabs stop appearing! Mum will also thank you, because the wounds the nails inflict on her undercarriage when they feed can be very painful.

I had a litter of pups last year that developed scabs at around the same age, it turned out to be a sort of puppy cradle cap like babies get and they just disappeared and left no trace after about 10 days.
