i have an eighteen month old neopolitan mastiff dog and i would like information on how to get started. He is a rescue dog but i do have his kennel club registration. Any information would be appreciated.

Hi. Has he been shown and all the relevant tests been done? If not, he is not a "reputable stud" and you may struggle to find a good bitch owner who will want to use him. Also, be aware that his temperement could change dramatically, once he has tasted forbidden fruit, and you don't want to be having a hormonal male of that size wanting to hump everything in sight I can tell you! ;)
Think seriously about what you are getting into - its a big responsibility.

Hi
Although he may not have been shown, some and only some "reputable" breeders would be interested in this dog. As long as he is a good example of the breed and had relevant health tests.
There are lots of reasons this dog may not have been shown, one being quite simply the dog has been in the wrong hands.
There are quite alot of what I call cheap Neo's about, purely because people have put just any two dogs together without any thought for the breed.
Feel free to email me if you would like anymore info, I'm not an expert yet :D but the only Neo owner on this board:)

Fair comment - but do you think its fair to use a rescue dog at stud in these circumstances? I know it wouldn't be the done thing in most other breeds, but would this be one where an excepton could be made if the dog was of good quality? :)

Hi,
Just a question but what do various breed rescues think about breeding/studding the dogs they have placed?

I think the word "rescue" can be interpreted various ways. Unfortunately there is no breed rescue for this breed just Breeders who take the dogs in then re-home them.
I have a bitch whom I call a "rescue" as she had been not cared for properly, but that doesn't mean she came from a rescue centre.
Not all dogs that are called rescue's are necessarily ill treated. Sadly I know of one breeder who does re-home these but does not spay or castrate, just simply don't supply papers.
The guest doesn't say how long he's had this dog, now sadly it quite possible that this person is thinking pound signs( I hope he hisn't ) as the stud fee is quite considerable.
The reason I invited this person to email me is so that I could give him a detailed opinion of the pro's and con's of breeding this breed. Like you said would you want a 75kg dog trying to hump everything site, not really!!
However because this is still quite a rare breed, there are some very good examples out there that simply have gone to pet homes and have got in the ring. I don't know about other breeds but you can't tell a show potential Neo til it's at least 6 months old.

Hi Alison,
I know they are quite rare and very expensive so it surprised me that one would be "rescued".It just puzzles me why so many posters want to stud their dogs obviously without any knowledge or experience or they wouldn't need to ask.I have had people saying to me for years"oh are you going to stud him" and I always respond with disbelief at their naivity before I even knew the ins and outs of why not.Why would any pet owner want to do this?Would you want to make money from your children is one good response but there again i supose there are those that do.
Leave it to those that know what they are doing I say.
You are so lucky to have one of these beautiful dogs,I have only ever seen one at discover dogs .I love big dogs and I hate to think people are exploiting them. Now you'l have to forgive me for rambling!!
