Each hip is marked depending on the shape, damage, articulation etc and given a score out of 75. i.e 5:9 or 1:1

The closer each hip is to 0 the better they are.

Different breeds have different average scores, as some have more inherited problems than others.

Hi, Basically your vet will x ray the dog. He will look at the pelvis/hipes/femurs etc. He cannot officially score them so will send the films off to the BVA, who will assess the hips as Julia said and give them a score. Breed averages can differ, for example Goldies average at the moment is 19. This is a total of the two figures added together (eg 10:9 =19). The lower the figure the better. In theory the breed averages should come down and down in time, as good breeders will only breed from well scored dogs. The results are then sent to you and you send the documents to the KC to be put onto your dogs registration and records. Hope this has helped. :)

Like it has already been said the lower the score the better. Also the scores should be pretty even for each hip.
e.g. a score of 1:18 for eg a lab with a breed ave of 19 would not be acceptable as uneven hips even though total score breed average. JMO.
