I've currently got a three year old male Japanese Akita. He has a great temperament and is so laid back and friendly. We're looking to get another akita and was just wondering what sex to get. How would he react if another male was introduced into the household?

Hi

i have 3 akitas 2 males and a bitch and they all live together in harmony. Has your male been castrated because he might accept a a male if he has but i would probably get a bitch because the bitch would not want to be dominant over the dog. Do u want a puppy or a adult akita?

He isn't castrated. We are wanting to get a puppy, not an adult dog. Our akita is a big friendly giant, but he doesn't seem to have much time for other dogs when they try to play with him. So we thought that a puppy may be better, and let them get used to each other.

I have an Akita Bitch and a Lab Bitch but before the lab was thinking of getting another akita and when I got in touch was recommended to get a bitch for similar reasons.

My two bitches get on like ahouse on fire the akita is very protective of the lab (not to us but to others) and mothers her as if she is her puppy

Good luck

I was talking to a breeder, and they also recommend that I get a bitch. They said that it is was a good possibility that two dogs would fight, as the akitas are a very dominant breed.

That is what I was told. Also Akita's supposedly hunted as Male and Female so was seen as a natural bonding
