Topic Dog Boards / Health / Puppy with dandruff!
- By Catherine [gb] Date 02.06.03 14:10 UTC
Hi all!!

We have now had our chocolate labrador pup for over a week. When we first got him he was on antibiotics as all the pups had picked up a bug and had the runs (the breeder had checked with her vet that he was ok to leave). We have taken him to our vet just for a check-up as his motions were still very soft with blood in. Hes being wormed regularly and seems happy and energetic and the blood has now disappeared. The problem is he has dandruff :(
We did bathe him once he had settled with us as he had a good roll around in his mess when he was still with his littermates (breeder told us to do this) but i'm worried now we shouldnt have. Is there anything we can do/buy to get rid of this?

Thanks
Catherine

Hi Catherine,

I have a bedlington terrier puppy now 19 weeks old who came to me at 7 weeks with the same problem.
Vet told me to give her evening primrose oil through her food and just wash and brush as normal and this has worked brilliantly. Clear of all dandruff within 1 month.
Did breeder use heat lamps for pups? This can also dry out the skin.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Linda

Thanks for that Linda :)
The only thing i'm worried about is that the pup is still on chicken and rice, will adding a bit of oil to it make a difference to his motions? I have never really used this before.

Thanks
Catherine

Hi Catherine,

You could try adding a splash of Olive Oil to the chicken and rice. If you use too much oil it can make the motions softer, but if that happens, just cut it back a little. I hope this helps! :)

Hi Catherine,

Not sure if it made any difference to Nala's motions at first or not because she had loose stools at time anyway, due to quite severe teething.
Everything has totally settled down now.
Maybe you could try it for a week to see if it agrees with him?
Good luck
Linda :-)
