Hello everyone,
I am thinking about buying a Wirehaired Hungarian Vizsla, but I was wondering if someone could help me as I am not sure how suitable the breed would be for me and my lifestyle. I obviously want to make sure I can offer it the best home possible before I buy one!
I work full time at the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket, and one of the best things about it is that we can bring dogs to work with us, so he would not be at home all day on his own. I have a big office (shared with other people) which he would have full use of. We are also very close to Newmarket Heath for walks at lunchtime :-) I want to train the puppy to be a working dog as I want to be able to go and pickup at my local shoot, however, I have never owned a dog before, let alone trained it for this sort of job. Would I be out of my depth with a Vizsla? I also have two cats and three horses-would a puppy get used to other animals?
Sorry there are so many questions! Any help anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks,
Gemma

Gemma,
A friend of mine who has bred and worked curly coated retrievers all her life was given a vizsla (not wire haired) and she was so easy to work and train, and so perfect in her behaviour, that my friend found her somewhat boring after the challenge that is a curly! She was a lovely, faultless dog. So, according to this (though it is only a single example), the vizsla is a very biddable and easy dog to deal with. I did have two other friends with them as pets, and they were also responsive, manageable, nice dogs. Can't imagine any problem with cats or horses. I don't know whether the wire-haired ones are different in temperament, though. They are not very common. Good luck! :)
Hi Guest I am no expert on wire haired Vizslas but we have smooth Vizslas and they are a delight they a bidable and keen to please but they do require firm but very kind handling from day one and they are very much a people dog so they dont like being left alone for long periods they also require lots of off the lead excersise.
We love them!! :)
