I am in the process of getting a british bulldog. i already have a 3 year old golden retriever (male) and i need advice on whether to get a dog or a bitch? Majority of people have said to get a bitch as they wont fight then, but my husband wants a dog!

My retriever gets on really well with bitches, but with other dogs he just tends to ignore them, or occasionally turn the corner of his lip up when they get too close. He's not nasty at all, he's a big softie.

also what age is best to have a bitch spayed? And what is the best way to introduce them? any info really appreciated

Not sure about how to introduce them but i would consult your vet about spaying. Is your dog neutered? to wait until the bitch has had her first season as it is better for them apparently, but i believe that they will spay earlier ( i think somewhere between 6-8 months not totally sure though - as don't know much about the age at which bulldogs come into season!) if it will cause problems between a male and female living in one house. Most people suggest getting two dogs of different sexes as fighting between males can become pretty intense. Perhaps some other members on here might have some experience of this kind of situation?

Hello Gemma1

I have two bulldog bitches, Hilda and Gladis, most of the time they get on fine, although sometimes the elder one of the two Hilda does square Gladis up at times. We got Gladis when Hilda was a year old, we introduced them in a neutral place, I brought the puppy home and met my partner with Hilda, they had a sniff and a play together, then brought them both home.

Also my sister has a golden labrador puppy and they all get on famously.

Not sure about the best age to get them spayed you would be better asking the vet.

Kind Regards

Jolene
