Hi

we have seen a Petit basset griffon vendeen in our local park and fallen in love with it

we would like another female dog to keep our 7 year old male company

would anyone recommend a Petit basset griffon vendeen as good for a grumpy older male dog that likes dogs but not people! in fact he loves female dogs!

also we have alot of friends now with children so wondered what they are like with kids

and thirdly and more importantly the american dog club said that they definitely can not be let off the lead which would be a nightmare as we live in our local park and on beaches and fields in devon

thanks in advance
sarah

Hi,
I fell in love with these gorgeous dogs at a show, so chatted to the owner about them. And it's true. If you let them off the lead, they will come back - but only when they're ready. You may have to wait an hour or two for it to return - hounds in general aren't good at recall; it's not what they have been bred for. (There are of course exceptions).

As I don't have 20 acres securely fenced, I reluctantly decided that they are not the breed for me!

My partner breeds PBGVs - they are super, fun hounds. I have walked with several of them, through fields or on the beach. Mike always lets them run loose, and they do come back, but not always immediately (we had one pup jumped in a ditch first, then came back dripping wet and muddy). they are a lot easier to deal with than Bassetts or Afghans, off the lead (only other 2 hound brreds I have dealt with). They can be very "hyper" in the house - and very vocal. They also are not quite as rough and tough as they look - real wimps when it comes to vaccinations etc.
bye

Hi
we had one of the early french imports & she was great...she would go off hunting with the minkhound pack and would also hunt clean boot very well. She also had a terriffic voice on her which she used at every opportunity. She lived to 14 and was very healthy til the end. As a breed they are good with kids but yes, they are a scent hound with primitive scent hound traits and need a lot of training. They tend to be sensitive so harshness is not the way with these hounds. Salt used to go to the beach everyday (we are in Devon too!) and would rush into the sea but never be brave enough to go out of her depth with the other hounds.
