Hi sorry to bother you alll again! just wondering about whelping boxes really. iv tried the site on dsposable whelping boxes that someone else suggested on this forum but i can't seem to get through to them. does it make a difference whether you use a cardboard box or a proffesionally made one? my bitch is only five weeks pregnant so iv got a bit of time to sort one out but would really like to have one ready for her as soon as possible. is it possible to buy them from pet shops? i'd appreciate any help or advice people may have on this subject.
Thanks Liz

Hi Lizzy
I'm presuming they are because they advertise in the dog papers most weeks. The phone number in the paper is: 01379 852670, got that out of last weeks dog's world so they must be still operating

For my first litter (of 10) we made a whelping box from a large very strong cardboard box (triple corrugation - I suppose a freezer or similar was originally packed in it. Lasted the litter out, then we chucked it.

For later litters we made a wooden box which we could dismantle and sterilise, which we still have.

So either seems to be fine!
Good luck, whatever you use!

THANKS FOR THE ADVICE! I THINK IF I CANT GET THROUGH TO THE COMPANY THEN IT WILL END UP BEING A CARDBOARD BOX!

Hi Lizzy, I recently managed to get a big corrigated plastic box from my local garden centre. Its great as it is really easy to clean. Still waiting for our pups (day 61) but I'm sure it will last well. We've adapted it to put whelping rails in too.

Hi!
Since I don't know what breed you need the whelping box for, I'm flying blind. Here are some alternative ideas I have used when I had five litters to raise and my girlfriend.
My girlfriend whelps out her Standard Poodles in a little kids vinyl swimming pool lining the bottom with old sheets, bed incontinence pads and has towels handy. Off to the side she has a box with a hot water bottle or heating pad and towel to keep the pups warm while the next one is being birthed.
I used a big wooden crate painted white so that it could be washed and bleached to prepare it for the whelping. I put the same type of things in it.
I have only used a cardboard box for kittens but other girlfriends have used them quite successfully for dogs.
I have use a dog crate by opening it up and using either just the bottom piece or both top and bottom pushed together.
Std Poodle breeder's husband has built her a modular whelping box of wood. The bottom is open. The four sides all hook together with latches, screws and door slide latches. It is painted white. It is very easy to clean and has a second tier to confine them as the puppies grow.
Hope this helps!
