hi Is it alright to give my girl cod liver oil capsules,i had her mated on 21st may will it harm the puppies

i don't know about cod liver oil capsules but when i had my dog mated i was recommended by the stud dog owner to give her calcium tablets every day until the puppies were two weeks old. when i asked my vet where i could get these from he advised me to give her nothing extra but instead gradually switch her onto a good quality puppy food around the fifth week and that will give her all the nutrients she needs. he also said to increase her food as she progresses throughout her pregnancy. i checked this with another vet just to make sure because the stud dog owner had been so sure about giving her extra calcium but this vet said virtually exactly the same as the other. so i gave her nothing extra and just recently swapped her onto a puppy food as she is now five weeks gone and she seems to be doing fine except the heat is getting to her now! hope that helps you!

For goodness sake DON'T GIVE CALCIUM DURING PREGNANCY!!! I gave mine wheatgerm oil until they were 3 weeks pregnant and raspberry leaf up to 3 weeks after whelping! If you give calcium during pregnancy their bodies stop producing it naturally and can actually induce eclampsia!

IM GLAD I CHECKED WITH MY VET THEN! SHE SEEMS TO BE FINE WITHOUT ANYTHIN BUT SHES EATING A LOT MORE! THANKS FOR THE ADVICE! EXTRA CALCIUM SEEMS TO BE AN OLD WIVES TALE!

The one and only bitch I ever gave calcium to whilst in welp, had to have a ceaser big puppies, I gave a small codliver oil capsule and a odourless garlic capsule to my present bitch who has not long welped 7 healthy puppies, everything went o.k. I only give calcium now when my bitch has finished welping to replace any calcium lost whilst welping.

Minniemouse do NOT give cod liver oil during pregnancy.

It clearly states this in most books inlcuding book of the bitch.

What may have had no adverse reaction to one dog may have on another so best not to take any chances.

hi minnie...i give mine fish oil caps but i think its crucial that they be fed at least 20 fat and 30 protien when pregnant, they have done several studies on this at iams.......not a iota less and i use the ''maximum calorie''towards the end which is 25/35........p.s don't give calicum what ever you do!!!..this can cause enclampsia because of the oversupplementation .....something to do with inability to process the extra.or something i forget exactly but its a big no no....use a high quality food like eukanuba it has plenty of calcium in it

HiMinnie Mouse!
I have done a lot of reading on supplemention during pregnancy for a bitch. My impression is; it is not a good idea except Red Raspberry Tea Leaves capsules. These caps help at whelping time to assist the bitch in an easier delivery.

:( COD LIVER OIL capsules or liquid is a definite no-no. Cod liver oil contains Vitamin A which is a Fat Soluable Vitamin. If too large a quantity is ingested it can't be excreted but is stored in the body fat causing toxicity. The worst time is during the 25th - 28th day of gestation. Total abstinence with this item is much better than taking any chances. You can read about it on the internet. My girlfriend had a puppy with a cleft palate in her latest litter of Standard Poodles. It is not common in this breed. Follow the Cleft Palate links to lots of information.
