Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / 4 Month old pup peeing when clapped
- By Solusmor [gb] Date 29.05.03 20:32 UTC
I have a friend at his witts end they have had dogs all their lives, at present they have a 4 month old lab pup and she is great apart from if they take her into anyones house she pees if clapped. Any suggestions would be welcome. We have bred and showed and never come across this one..

The pup will probably be so excited at going somewhere new, its quite common for young pups to do this, ive had mine do this, but they will grow out of it, tell them not to give the pup into a row for it, just ignore and clean it up.

Am I right in thinking you're using the word 'clapped' in it's Scottish meaning, ie patted? If so, to me (not an expert by any means), this suggests she is nervous in strange situations. Perhaps they should let her make the first moves towards strangers, rather than them approaching her.

I'm fairly suprised you haven't come across this before it is partly due to exitement and partly submisive at 4 months bladder control may still need to mature somewhat and when the puppy gets fussed she gets excited and losses control slightly. They do grow out of it .Try getting people to greet her outside initially so as puddles don't matter as much.Best Wishes Gillian

Thanks very much for all the replies, hopefully it will sort itself out when she matures a bit.

My Una was like this and grew out of it, she is a self confident old bat now so I think it will pass and getting the greeting and weeing over outside was what I did :-D

My springer was like that as a pup at just one friends house. It was down to excitement so I did what Anne did and got her to greet her outside. She grew out of it.

lol I have to say that being an aussie and trying to understand the original post certainly was difficult. I had no idea what clapped meant. Thanks for enlightening me..

Don't worry, even with my 1/4 Scots blood, being London born, and Bristol domiciled, I hadn't a clue either!!! :D

Better picture than me - I had a vision of them boxing the poor things ears and thought no wonder it's peeing!
