I picked Darcy up from the dog sitters on MOnday and she had a retching cough. I thought she had something stuck in her throat and so rang the vets who over the phone diagnosed kennel cough and told me to give her Benylin cough mixture!!!!!

Is this the usual treatment???

Is kennel cough more serious because she's only 6 months???

Yep, Benylin (or similar) is the usual treatment! Odd, isn't it?! At 6 months I would think she's strong enough to get over it easily - it's usually only very young pups, elderly dogs and sickly dogs that have a problem with it (it's similar to flu in people).
I'm sure she'll be okay.

Thankyou for putting my mind at rest!!!!!

Any ideas how to get her to take it.
becasue unfortunately in trying to get her to take it I've discovered something she doesnt like and now every time she sees the bottle she does a runner.

I can only suggest brute force, I'm afraid! :( One person with the dog in an armlock, and the other with the spoon....

Use a syringe.
Don't show her the bottle first but just load the syringe with the dosage in another room if she's getting stressed seeing it.
Stroke her calmly to get her to relax - then insert the syringe into the corner of her mouth at the back and squirt towards the back. This can be done real fast when you get the hang of it.
I prefer it rather than stretching mouths and poking about with a spoon.

Hi R/Parker, I do the same as Lara. Anything liquid I have to give my lot is given by syringe & its easy when you get the aim right :) Tell your vet you want some & they should give you some.
I have some links for info on kennel cough & if you like I could put them up for you :)

I rang my vets yesterday with the same question and the nurse/receptionist said it was okay to mix it in her food.

Cant imagine it working as well

Does everyone else think it would be okay like this?????

She seems to be getting a lot more lethatgic at the moment.
Should I presume its just the hot weather or start to get worried

would be greatful to read any information you've got.

Would she be likely to eat the food if it was 'poisoned' ;) with cough mixture?
- By Lara Date 30.05.03 12:06 UTC
Well that's a new one on me.

Thought cough mixture mainly worked by soothing the throat as you swallowed it to help block the cough reflex. Vapours being inhaled into the lungs to help break up mucous. Can't see that being effective at all distributed through food.
Anyone else shed any light?
Lara x

Added: forgot to say that some dogs can get really depressed with kennel cough. Don't encourage any unnecessary activity as it can be really serious and damaging to the lungs. Go back to the vet if you are still worried as pneumonia can set in.
