I HAVE BEEN ON THIS SITE A COUPLE OF TIMES, AND IF I REMEMBER RIGHT SOMEBODY SAID NOT TO BUY A PUP FROM A BREEDER IF THEY HAVE A COUPLE OF LITTERS OF THE SAME BREED AND BREED OTHER PEDIGREE DOGS. IS THIS TRUE?

I think that you will find that our advice is (1) To check that the seller actually is the breeder; (2) To see the mother with the pups, at their home; (3) To check that both parents have had all the necessary health checks required for that particular breed (and that you see copies of all certificates - eyes, hips/elbows); and (4) to expect to be questioned closely as to YOUR suitability as to ownership of one of the puppies!

It may happen sometimes that a reputable breeder will have two litters of almost the same age available, and quite a few reputable breeders do own two different breeds.

If you see the dam and pups at home, you will be able to judge whether or not you feel happy with the way the breeder has raised the puppies, the breeder should volunteer the information about health checks and offer copies of certificates of hip and eye scoring. A caring breeder is more concerned about the home that his/her puppy is going to, and if there is any doubt about your suitability in the breeder's mind, he/she should not be blamed if they refuse to sell you a puppy!

Steer clear of any set up that has more than four litters available at any one time - or offers puppies from Afghans to Westies available at any time!!

Hope this is of some help

Margot

I am thinking of getting a Welsh Terrier. Do you know anything about them?
