Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Dachshund wetting our bed

Hi!
I am so hoping somebody can give me some advice! Our dachshund, Errol, (about 15 months old) keeps wetting our bed- and various other places in the house. (We got him at six weeks and house-training went well.)
We work at home and he pretty much has the run of the house. (New house, moved in about 3 and a half months ago.) There's a doggy door in the kitchen door, which is always open, so he comes in and out as he pleases.
Initially he slept in the kitchen (it was still summer) but if he got a chance to get into our room he'd wee on the bed. Now it's winter here and pretty cold, so we thought we'd move his bed into our room (there's a heater on). Not only does he climb in with us in the middle of the night, but if he gets half a chance during the day, he wets our bed! I'm really tired of washing pillows, duvets, sheets etc every second day!
He's got more toys than a kid, gets heaps of attention and has a healthy diet. He's a loving and clever dog and we're crazy about him but this bed wetting story is getting us down. I get the idea he does it when he feels he wants attention NOW and we don't respond immediately. If we take him to the spot he gets aggressive and tries to bite - almost like he thinks he's the boss and we've got no right telling him otherwise.
Any ideas on how to stop this?

First of all prevent him from getting on the bed, if at all possible crate him and only let him out when you are with him. Upon letting him out take him outside and wait till he goes no matter how long he takes but as soon as he has been get him inside quickly. That way he will learn that as soon as he's been to the loo he can come back in and as it's winter he will learn to go the minute you put him outside!
Is he neutered or entire? He could be going through his adolescent stage at 15 months and just being pushy. Only allow him access to a few of his toys at a time and swap them over so he doesn't get 'used' to them being around all the time.
If he does wet inappropriately in the house then just ignore him completely. If it is attention seeking behaviour then the dog doesn't mind what attention he gets (good or bad) and everytime you react he has his 'reward'.
Also get him checked out by a vet to make sure he isn't suffering from an infection.
All the best

Catch him in the act and do exactly as you did when housetraining. The only difference for me with an older dog is that I do scold them if I catch them, but praise exactly the same way when they do it outside. He has to know that marking inside the house is not acceptable and taking housetraining back to the beginning is one way to do it.

He is probably marking to establish territory and dominance, but the reasons really are not important. If he is not neutered and you do not plan to use him at stud, then I would have him neutered.

I was going to suggest exactly what Stacey did. I had a male Rottie for many years that was completely housetrained, except when he was covering another male's "scent" with his own. :) (He would "cover" a human male's scent in bathrooms, the weight room, or the bed whenever possible.) Have him neutered if you are not planning to breed him, but keep in mind it will likely still take some discipline to break this habit. When you take him to the scene of the crime and he becomes aggressive, I would suggest using a crate or putting him outside for his allotted "timeout".

Dachshunds are very stubborn, but also very bright. He will get the message.

Best of luck.

Certainly have him neutered if not already done. It will make him a nicer dog, adolecent males can be very trying but it sounds as though he is trying it on with you. Let him know who is boss!!
