Hello there
I just wanted to pick the brains of any dachshund breeders out there!
I have a beautiful 11 month old mini smooth haired dachshund who stopped growing at about 6 months! She is nearly 6 pounds and perfectly fit and healthy! My question is, she is currently in her first season and I am trying to debate whether I should spay her or not - obviously im not even thinking about breeding from her yet - but it worries me that she probably wont ever be big enough to carry pups and therefore perhaps I should just take her to the vets. Seeing as she hasnt grown in 3 months - Im not convinced that she'll suddenly grow now! Any advice would be great thanks!

Personally, i would say she still has some growing to do at 6 months old.
Have you bred before? Dachshunds aren't a straight forward breed. Quite often they need to have caesarian sections, which are very costly.
I'm not a breeder, just a fan of miniature dachsies.
There are some breeders on this site, who will hopefully be able to give you more information.
Forgot to say, that my mini smooth averages about 8lbs.

Hi Snoopy
Sorry I probably didnt make my previous note clear. My dachsie is now 10 (nearly 11) months old and hasnt grown since she was about 6 months!
I am aware of the difficulties of breeding dachsies yes, which is why I wondered whether anyone had bred from a tiny dachshund before.
Thanks anyway.

Hi I am not a Dachshund expert, but I know that a third size of Dachs exists. They are not recognised in the UK by our KC but they do sometimes occur in miniature litters. They are called Kaninchen. Could yours be a Kaninchen.

HI Nursey
Thanks for your response. I have looked up on the net information about Kanichans and it does look as if that is what Ive got! (Sounds nicer then being the 'runt of the litter' anyway!!!). She certainly seems to fit in all the size limits for a Kanichan anyway.
Why does the KC not recognice them as breed size I wonder? Also is it rare to get a Kanichan in a Miniature litter?
Thanks

Hi Cate, as I said before, I don't know alot about Dachshunds but as far as I know Kaninchen are indeed rare or at least unusual, but as far as breeding from one, I really couldn't be much help. I hope you find the answer. Perhaps the breed clubs could be of assistance.
Good Luck, Dawn R.
