Hi all ,
Ella is now almost eight months. This morning we have noticed a VERY strong scent coming from her back end and were wondering if this might be a sign shes due her first season? I'm a bit cautious to walk her , ill get Saul to take her today ( just incase).Any thoughts would be gladly recieved

OK .. please some one reply!! Ella was this morning ( i am told ) very lethargic on her walk ~ most unlike her.Allthough it is usually me that walks her , so it could be her own protest....but she does smell very badly!

It sounds as if she's off-colour rather than coming in season - are you able to take her temperature?

Zoe - I don't recall Phoebie ever smelling as bad as you say even when in full flow.

Why oh why do they always wait for Bank Holidays to worry us

As JG says it does sound more like off colour than season.
Could she have got anal gland yuck on her coat at all this morning (she is a newfie right) and it's dried so not visible but smelly? I know that doesn't explain her lethargy on the walk but as you say that may be due to being with him and not you.

Is she bright eyed, drinking/eating normally ?

I'm not able to take her temp.
She is eating and drinking normally , shes getting lots of attention from the cats though ( lots of bum sniffing going on...and mounting~bit ambitious of the cat!).
Yes , she is a newf.
She was bathed and brushed last night.Ill have another check!
Thanks all

I don't remember any of my bitches smelling when they were in season. Keep an eye on it, and if you get worried of course take her to see the vet.
Good luck.

My newfy only had her first season last month at the age of 16 mths. No smell, no mess either, infact I was quite pleasantly surprised.

well she dosent smell so much now.I'm hoping it may jsut have been a normal "dogg7y" smell heightened by the hot weather..! but the vet will check her over tomorow.
Thank's to all

Thats sounds very unusual to me, none of my bitches ever have a smell that I can describe as unpleasant.

Have you noticed any discharge or any stickiness on her hair round that area?

If there is any sign of that then get her to the vet asap, as it could be infection.

When one of my bitches went down with pyometra my dogs were as interested in her as if she was in season!!

Kassie didn't smell either when in season:confused: Is she *cleaning* herself more than usual?

yes , she definatly is self cleaning a lot more.
One other non related thing , why is the time an hr wrong on the forum?
- By John [gb] Date 26.05.03 20:19 UTC
The time's not wrong Zoe, you have it set to GMT not BST. Change it in your profile. Now we are international the forum cannot set the time for every possible country, that is up to the individual person!

Best wishes, John

As for your other matter :) Have you tried wiping her with a toilet tissue to see if there is any discharge?

Best wishes, John
- By Zoebeveridge [gb] Date 26.05.03 20:27 UTC
I'll try that John thanks. The smell appears to be back. Its not overly strong , but quite sweet and sickly. We only notice it because she never smells!!
- By John [gb] Date 26.05.03 20:39 UTC
I know everone here says they get no smell but I find that Anna does have a very slight smell when in season. I've never noticed it with any of my others but then again, I was a smoker when they were in season so I might not have done anyway!

You know the drill, if in any doubt at all, see your vet.

Best wishes, John

I should take her to see the vet in the morning - 'sweet and sickly' doesn't sound right, somehow. Hope it's nothing to worry about, though.

Oh i shall!
why do these things allways happen over bank holidays? im sure its to give me something to do all day!
I must say though , Ella is haveing the time of her life! she's just finnished a ten min "dart" about the garden.I havent seen her this happy or playfull in days!! the lethargic walk must have been down to Saul walking her and not me.
Arent dogs funny , they get their little routines and the way they think it should go.
For example i walk Ella Monday to Friday as soon as i get in from dropping the kids off (9.30ish).This is because we all get up at 7 but Ella takes an hour or so to get with it ( she is very lazy) she Has her breakfast at 8ish and then has to wait an hr ( avoid bloat).Anyway,i then walk her~bring her home and she pesters no one all day long. However on the rare occasion that Saul walks her ( exact same time/place etc ) when she gets home EVERY time i go to the door she gets her lead!!! its almost as though Saul's walk didnt count because im the real"walk" person!
She cracks me up!
And just incase any one feels im wicked walking her only once i will add that we do often split the walk into two smaller ones , but i often find one enough...you cant over walk these big breeds!
