Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / How to start natural diet

Hi, I am thinking of starting my dogs on the bones and raw meat diet. Right now they eat Breeder's Choice for all ages. I want to do some research so I can be sure to switch them slowly enough and also that I have the time and resources to do it. I am looking for a book, I looked at Amazon.com, but only found books with treats or that tell you why packaged dog food is bad (couldn't find anything like what I am looking for, according to customer reviews).

Soo ... I was wondering, can anyone please recommend a book for starting the barf diet? Also, books about dog nutrition in general would be good.

Thank-You

Hi,
Are you inthe UK? if you are I would suggest joining BritBarf which is a friendly site and will give you lots of info. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BritBarf

As for books try The BARF Diet by Ian Billinghurst or Switching to raw by Sue Jonston (sp)

Many people just switch over night with no probs I did, but if you want to do it slowly that would be fine too. Only thing is to feed kibble and bone well apart as they will digestat different speeds.

Hi, Thank you for the info, actually I am in the U.S., but I will look for both of those books. I have one dog who is a very picky eater & another who eats like a vacuum! I am thinking a partial raw diet will help them both. Anyway, thanks! ~ m

Also check out Yahoogroups. There are a couple hundred BARF lists out there - some by breed/location etc.

Good luck
