We have two delightful Norwich Terriers, Bear (3yr old neutered male) and Eliza (7.5 month old spayed female). Bear is normally the leader and is dominant (so far). But whenever there is something happening - like someone visits, or we come home, or a cat or dog goes by and Bear gets exited (sometimes barks and sometimes just wags his tail exitedly) Eliza gets exited too (she may or may not know why he's exited). She jumps at his back and neck, biting, growling, barking and pulling at his fur. When she sees him in the morning (they sleep seperately), she runs to him wagging her tail and agressively tries to do the same thing. Does anyone have any experience with this behavior? Is it normal? Will it pass? Is it correctable? Any help would be very much appreciated.

She might just be a typical pup and being a bit over enthusiastic. My 9 month pup is getting a bit more socially acceptable, but still lets herself down when visitors arrive and can be quite mouthy.

However, I'm no expert so I'm sure someone else will come along soon.

Hi I have the same problem with 2 bulldog bitches one 6 month's old and one 6 year's old, every time the puppy see's her she's biting her face and leg's, the problem is the older bulldog put's up with it so i doubt it's going to stop very easily, whereas i've got a shih tzu who is 2 who the bulldog puppy wouldn't dare bite because she know's she'll get bitten back! it's quite funny to watch her walking around a sweet little shih tzu! I wish my older bulldog would just retaliate just once i'm sure this would help but i'm afraid it's not in her nature too. Still perhap's the pup will outgrow the behaviour because as you know it drive's you mad. The only thing i've noticed that reduces it a bit is if you don't seperate them to much as they get so excited when they see the older one it starts all over again, although this is easier said than done when the older dog is getting beaten up! my sound like they are going to come through the kitchen door when they meet in the morning

As long as you can avoid actual bloodshed, it's best if you let them sort themselves out. We don't speak their language - they do!

How they can hear what there saying while one is being hurled around by the other is beyond me!!

P.s the puppy is actually playing so no worry about blood being shed, but i think the older one could be driven to drink!!;)

Protect the older dog from the pup - the older one can do more damage if riled beyond endurance. It's up to you to take charge here and see fair play.

I don't let it go on for more than a couple of minutes, as i said before if you seperate to much it's starts over, because the young one is even more excited, i have had this before, and they have grown out of it eventually, here's hoping anyway :)

My youngest MB (7 months) has a game she plays with the oldie Min( nearly 13) where she knows when Min is up for play fighting when she lies down and rolls over with mouth open ! MB will then lie next to her and they start play fighting. MB is very gentle and licks alot and play bites and Min will play back by placing the whole of MB's head in her mouth. There is a constant deep mumbling growling going on whilst they are playing. When Min has enough she will either have a woof at her and MB knows she has had enough or Min will get up and go to her safe haven we have for both the older ones on their sofa or the bed in the dining room. Min loves it ! She loves the attention and during the playing she will normally get an eye and ear lick as well ! Can't be bad !!

MB and Moose(19 months) are completely different when they play ! It is more rough and tumble and tearing round the house and outside ! MB used to be allowed to win when she was little but Moose now lets her get so far and will then bat her round the ears and let her know enough is enough.

As I speak they are all at it ! :)

I very rarely intervene as they all have learnt who can do what and how far each can go but if the level of noise gets past a certain level I will go in a stop them. I will get them all sitting down and give them a lecture on playing nicely and tell them isn't it time they grew up !! I have been doing this with Min since she was a pup ! :) I wonder whether she ever will?...........:)

Cava 2 and Una play together but Cava is very respectful of Una and stops as soon as Una wants to. He will often ask her to play but if she doesn't want to never pushes it. I love watching them together. Mind you he's a typicalBeardie so sometimes gets a bit too rough and Una tells him in no uncertain terms. I put Una's teaching as having had every bit as much influence on his lovely nature with other dogs as my training. Braid my last boy was equally good with other dogs, Una's help again :-D
