Hi, My girl has had puppies and has agreen discharge which i know is normal, however, the discharge has stopped but has stained her fur around her back legs, I trimmed it at much as i could proir to whelping, it really smells, and to make things worse, shes licking it whcih is making it red and sore, she had this after her last whelping and this time i've tried to stop it getting worse by applying the prescirbed cream and getgin antibiotics as before, anyone any thoughts on why this has happened again, it is uncommon?
your comments are welcomed with interest.

Hi Amber, A green discharge after whelping isn't really considered normal, a reddy brown, yes, but green? This can sometime indicate an infection or something left behind. Has she had her after whelping check up with your vet? Hopefully everything is fine, but if she was mine I would seek a vets opinion. In the meantime, wash the stained area thoroughly and often, or you will perhaps find that the hair and skin will dry up, and the coat will fall out.

Hi ,
Thanks for your quick reply. I thought green was a bit odd too, but my vets say this is just all the placental waste and as long as she's not continuing to lose it its ok(?!) Last time she picked up a urine infection hence the reason he gave tablets, he has precribed the same tablets again so i am hopeful i have caught in before it causes too much trouble for her. She also loses the pigment in her tope lip where she cleans herself, it comes back but looks fairly odd, like shes wearing lipstick (!)
she is fine in herself and if there were any doubt she wasn't quite right, i would be straight round the surgery, she is my pride and joy and priceless to me and my family.

Hi.........I too have a litter, my girls loss was also green just for a couple of days, like the green of the placenta, but I do insist on having an anti-biotic injection after delivery, just in case any thing was left over.
If I were you I would take her to the vet and ask for the injection just to be on the safe side before things get any worse.
Good luck

Despite all my best efforts (and vet checks) my bitch still lost all the hair from her tail where the discharge touched. :(
But it grew back.

green is perfectly normall, cant you bath around her rear, or soak a cloth and clean her up,

Green is normal for a couple of days, after which it should be murky browny-red. If the green carries on much after this, you may well have a retained membrane or even a dead puppy.
Consult your vet for a jab of oxytocin and antibiotic.

I always bath my bitches after they have whelped to clean them up you just need to make sure that they are totally dry before you put them back.
