Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / still born pup - bt and owner desolate

Hi everyone, I hope someone can help me, not even the vets I have asked have been able to help.

My beautiful English Bull Terrier Ellie had a stillborn pup and has been traumatised by the whole experience. I have completely cleaned the flat and washed everything hoping the smell of the poor pup has gone (although I know dogs sense of smell is far greater than ours). Ellie keeps pacing the flat desperately looking for the pup, and crying.

When I calm her down, and comfort her, giving her lots of cuddles and love she does calm down but the second I get up to do anything she starts her search again! It breaks my heart to see Ellie this way and I know it will take a lot of love and time before she gets better but is there anything I can do to help her?

I would appreciate any comments you may have.

Thanks for your time

You can always try to find a litter that needs fostering and offer her services if she really is distraught. Other than that you just need to give her some TLC. It's a horrible thing to happen but most dogs calm down after a few days.
All the best,

Hi ,

I had the same with my bitch who lost a litter. Someone (i think it was Westie lover) advised a homeopathic medicine - though cant rememebr teh name - which i bought at the chemist and was speciafically for grief adn that helped her loads. Lots of TLC, and i found that getting her out of the house and staying with my parents did her the world of good. I also let her have a surrogate pup (cuddly toy) for a while adn this really seemed to help her - though we actaully had to take it on walks for the first couple of days or so - but after about a week of gradually taking it off ehr for longer periods she settled down adn went back to her normal self. I draw the line at that though - and had her spaye i couldn't bear the thought of her having to go through it all again.

Thank you all for your kind thoughts and reassurances that Ellie will get better. I shall go to a homeopath tomorrow and see if I can get something to help her (and me!). I agree I shall never let Ellie go through this again and shall get her spayed once she is back to her normal joyful self.

I did try giving her a substitute teddy but this made her more upset and I guess I must just pray that time is the greatest healer.

Thank you all once again for your speedy reply and your kind words. I shall let you know how Ellie is in a few days time.

Thank you

Hi Everyone

This is just an update on Ellie, my beautiful English Bull Terrier. She is improving every day and I think the worst is over. We have been on some long country walks and for the first time yesterday she was her old bouncy self and seemed to have no cares in the world but for retrieving the sticks thrown for her!

So thank you all so much for re-assuring me that Ellie would get better. I have my lovely companion back who is getting loads of tlc and I in return.

Take care everyone

Please to hear it. By the way I have an Ellie too but she's a mini poodle!
