Topic Dog Boards / Showing / What are stakes??
- By ratty [gb] Date 23.05.03 17:39 UTC
Hi everyone,

I was at the SKC show on Sunday and heard announcements about breeders and junior stakes. What are these? I've heard them talked about on here aswell but never been sure of who can enter and how?

Thanks,
Jen

Suit yourself Sarcen! By the way, U is spelt "you" and R is spelt "are" and caps lock is considered bad manners!

Yes John and when someone asks a question maybe they want a proper reply not an answer they could get from a child
- By ratty [gb] Date 23.05.03 18:24 UTC
Could anyone explain please?

Thanks

Classes where money can be won, instead of or as well as cards and rosettes.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 24.05.03 05:24 UTC
The most common stakes classes, usually sponsored by a commercial company, but sometimes the society are, Champion stkes for Champions, Veteran stakes (for dogs over 7), Puppy stakes. The eligibility rules will be in the show schedule.

You must be careful though, as if you are baten in a stajkes class, and then are BOB in your breed, being a beaten dog, you cannot progress further to Group judging and Best in show.

Thgis happened to me at Birmingham, I didn't think I would do that well in breed, and went in the stakes before we had the breed classes, then went on and won BOB.

Sometimes Clive we share a little joke. We are not paid for our help and advice so I figure that a little joke helps the world go by. If you like to pay me then I will give you my undivided attention. Until then I will thank you to mind your own business!

There's no doubt that this board has lost a lot of it's old charm Dizzy. In days gone by people were friendly, shared a joke and offered good advice but looking at the board these days it's all back biting and trying to score points. Still, I suppose these people know what they are talking about. The last time I made a little joke another new poster decided to take me to task but after watching what that one has since had to say I see nothing to convince me they have anything to bring to the board. There is something about empty vessels making the most noise.

John :(

i did find the post to you abrasive to say the least "BUT" the board name should of prewarned us. best not to bother with folk with attitude problems .
- By John [gb] Date 23.05.03 20:22 UTC
I suppose I'm a bit too trusting when I post, but I'm afraid with some people on the board now it's no surprising that so many of the most knowledgeable of the original posters have left the board.

I liked your reply, especially as with your final word it was obviously humourous!

There is nothing wrong with not displaying your email address. You've been around long enough to know that this site is often visited by trolls. I've also seen posts from people complaining about being bombarded with unwanted emails from people on this site.

Hi Lara, I have to admit that my email address is very well known re:lab rescue and on here and I dont think Ive ever had an Iffy email well.......... maybe a few from my daft friends :) anyway I know that is the right of people wether to withold or not I respect that but at one time if I saw someone needing help or advice maybe bereaved I would email privately and maybe send them a little poem or something a bit of comfort maybe offer help etc...but most of the time the emails are hidden now,I hate the trolls that come on here and try to spoil the board but you get that all the time anywhere blimey did you read my post re: phone tapping two weeks ago someone actually got into one of our volunteers private phone and changed her recorded answerphone message thats a bit scary too and real menaces at work there.
- By Lara Date 24.05.03 09:09 UTC
Yes I did read that post and that whole incident was disturbing. Glad it's resolved now and it was a good job that someone alerted you to it before more harm was done than you already may not be aware of (meaning callers being put off and not coming back!)

Couldn't agree with you more John.

We used to be able to have some real fun on here all good humoured and look at it now.

But we also used to be able to give advice and discuss various methods in a good humoured way, not so now.

I'm with you John! I was astonished at the rude answer you got. A tongue-in-cheek "Clever Clogs" response would have been fine.

More power to your elbow.
:)

Leaving aside the humour debate (and I am all for a little light relief whenever possible) The Stakes classes mentioned at SKC do have money on offer, as previously answered, but more importantly for most competitors, they qualify for various "Finals" hald at various bit events at the starts of the year. For the Puppy stakes, the final is in early January in London, with the judging first, and then lunch, for the Junior Stakes it is in (I think) February, at a different Stately Home type venue each year, again judging then lunch. The Champion, Junior Handling and Veteran Stakes all have final at a weekend "Do" hosted by Chum in Birmingham in January, with Lunch, judging, Dinner Dance and breakfast (doesnt eating play a big part in all this?:)). Breeders stakes, newest of the bunch, have final at Crufts. All owrk in roughly the same way - a winner (or winners) from each day of the show come back for the final judging on the last day, the overall winner going on to the final. All general and group Ch shows have "heats". The finalist get a certain amount of free publicity, pics published etc, and the overall winners get loads of publicity, prizes, and, of course a title (Pup of the Year, Junior of the year, etc)
