I just received a boxer puppy as a gift and I am somewhat concerned about her weight. She will be 6 weeks on 5/24 and she weighs approximately 3 pounds she is pretty boney and also very tiny height wise. Is this normal for a female boxer puppy? Please let me know.

I would say that that is quite light for a breed such as a boxer but as long as she isn't listless and is behaving normally then I wouldn't worry too much. As you say she is quite a tiny puppy. The litter couldhave been big and they didn't let her eat her fill but now shes on her own she will probably catch up.

I just wanted to thank you for the information you have sent. I believe that you are correct as the puppy is eating well and is not lethargic or listless. She is actually very playful when she is not at rest. She still sleeps a lot at this point because of her age but I expect that. I have had her for two days now and I can see that she is already gaining weight. So I think with proper care she will improve. I plan to take her to the vet next week to get a full check up. Thank you again for the information.

Make sure they check her heart especially, as poor weight gain ina pup can be a sign of a heart defect. At six weeks even in a big litter I would expect one of my pups (that are 20 - 23kg as adults) to weigh at least 6 pounds at six weeks, and often nearer 8 pounds.

If it is poor rearing I also think she may need worming, and at any rate would be due t be wormed at 7 or 8 weeks depending on if or when last done.

If she is active and playful, and eating well (at least 4 meals, or 6 if she will eat them until 8 weeks) and hopefuly she will make up the lost gorund.

Hi has she been checked by the vet as i would think she should weigh around 8 pounds she could maybe have a heart problem, but let's just hope she's been reared pretty badly, and will pick up now she's with you :)
