Hiya I always get mine in my arms whilst my hubby gives her a treat like a big chew to distract her, and I cut them. Better still, get your groomer to do it !!

I usually have Rossi on my lap till he falls asleep then do them, it can take while though and if he wakes up stop clipping stoke him for a while (30secs usually does it) then he is asleep again and carry on. Works for me, but then I think I must be lucky having a sleepy dog!!

thanks for the advice but i'm afraid i don't have a groomer, as i have 3 labs and groom them myself, also they are all very hyper and would wake up if i went near them with the clippers.think i was looking for a magic answer really:)

Some people swear by a Dremel. I must admit it's top of my present list......

Have just got the Black and Decker version and it seems to do the same job ! We are gradually introducing it to Min the oldie as she is a real drama queen when it comes to nail clipping time. We are going to take it slowly ! :)

My two hate having their nails clipped (fortunately they only seem to need the front ones done). The older dog only had one nail done at a time :) Now we find the best solution is for my daughter or hubby to hold them and drip feed them with choccy drops while I clip away :D Older one still struggles a bit but it gets done in very quick time.

thanks, the girls nails are ok, but my choccy beast boy wont let me or the vet anywhere near his, and they are very long.i've just given him a chew and as soon as he saw the clippers he ran upstairs, and started to play tig.he's a naughty boy , but clever enough only to do what he wants to do.He hates the vet and the feeling is mutual.i think me and the other half will have to do a pin down job on him tonight!!!:)

I know exactly how you feel, our lurcher Sky wont let anyone near her nails, so much so we now have to take her to the vets sedated to have them done.
Good luck finding something that will work :)

I tried the Dremel, but Savannah was terrified of it, so no go with that. So what I've settled for is a human foot file (like a giant emery board). If I do it every week (or more often) all I need is the file. If I miss, then I have to clip, but just the tiniest bit, then file. It's not so much of a fight if I use the file.

do you mean one of those that gets dried skin off the bottom off your feet?god thats a brilliant idea, a more gradual grinding down....i will def try it asap when i've caught the beast.he didn't have us to mollycoddle him from day one, we only got him at 9 months, hence the total defiance and beastiness.the girls all come and put theyre paws up for me to do theirs after the initial face pulling.thanks for that!:)
That's exactly what I'm talking about. But get a good quality one. I got the £2 ones at tescos and they only lasted for 2 filings. The Scholls ones are about £4-5 and they last me several weeks, so much better value for money.
Wendy

I use a metal-working file (about 6" long) that I filched out of husband's toolbag!! It does the job okay, but with 63 nails to do each week I'd like something a bit quicker!
:)
I have an electric corded Dremel wanna be that cost us about £25 and was used once to terrifiy a screaming dog (who then sat quietly for the first and only time to have her nails clipped) LOL. Want it?? (assuming I can find where hubby hid it)
Wendy

Yes please!
Email me privately and we'll have a chat - meanwhile I'll double check with hubby that it's okay (and that he can find it).
click on my name - my email should be available.

Have mailed you.

I have taught all mine to lie still whilst I do any form of grooming or treatment. Even Ashy (the puppy) only wriggles a little bit for the first few seconds.
They tend to struggle if they think its going to hurt i.e the inner part has been nipped before.
I guess its a matter of patience and treats

yeah you're probably right julia, who knows what happened in his murky first 9 months apart from quite a bit of ill treatment, which would account for his reluctance to hold still for anything, except an ear massage:)my new puppy is getting the full grooming, nail clipping, ear cleaning routine like the other girls did to avoid all this hassle in the future:)

i use a dremmel and wouldnt be without it------pei are famous for hating their nails done,--but i persevere as i have a short nail obsession . if you do get one buy the rechargeable one, as then your not plugged into a switch and can get to do the nails wherever its easiest, it has two speeds, a slow quietish one-then a real fast one for when theyre used to it,

I'm a huge dremel fan :) - in fact I was only using mine this afternoon.
Aside from filing dogs toenails it's one of the handiest tools I've got. I find all sorts of uses for it :)

yeah theyre black and i suspect that its his old vets, with his old owner who scared him off having them cut.ive bought a foot file last night so here's hoping.i want to avoid the vets like the plague as he isnt too keen on men -understatement of the year- and the lady vet turned out to be a student whos now left.thanks for all your advice i will def take heed of it:)

Burns ocean bites are the only treat that will keep my weimaraner still for long enough to have her nails clipped. Glad I'm not alone - was beginnig to think that i had the only dog that hates this.
